Mission and Outreach
Umoja Partnership Sunday at North Will Be Nov. 7
Mark your calendars for Nov. 7 when North Church will celebrate the work done by the Umoja Partnership (UP). UP, one of North’s mission and outreach programs, works in Western Kenya with orphaned and vulnerable children to provide food and access to schooling and mentoring programs. Started in 2006, this agency is a partnership of many faiths, from different cultures, on two different continents, united in service to change lives by keeping children in school.
On Nov. 7 you will have several ways to learn about Umoja and become involved. First, Leonard Otiende, the Kenyan director, will offer a "Moment for Mission" at both worship services and will also make a presentation during the 9:45 Sunday school hour. Please join us in Fellowship Hall to hear his report on the current programs, the number of children impacted, and the UP's plans for the future.
Later that day the annual Interfaith Thanksgiving Dinner will be held at Second Presbyterian Church at 5 p.m. This is a fundraising event for the food security program, which provides school lunches to students attending 20 elementary schools in the Chulaimbo region of Kenya, where at least 20 percent of school-age children have lost one or more parent to HIV/AIDS or other diseases. The meal will be typical Kenyan dishes, and you will have the opportunity to participate in an auction of over 100 items, many of them donated by members of North’s community. Tickets to the event are $50 and can be purchased by going online at Umoja Partnership.org or by contacting Patty Hefner.
We look forward to celebrating the UP on Nov. 7!

Introduction to Contemplative Prayer Workshop Is Nov. 13
Every Tuesday evening we offer contemplative and meditative prayer in the chapel. Have you ever wondered about it, but haven’t tried it? Perhaps you felt you didn’t know enough about it. We will offer an "Introduction to Contemplative Prayer" workshop led by North member John Drake on Saturday, Nov. 13 from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in Fellowship Hall. There is a $20 fee to cover the cost of a book you will receive that can be paid the day of the event. Please RSVP to Amy by Nov. 10.
Here is what "Contemplative Outreach" has to say about contemplative prayer. “We may think of prayer as thoughts or feelings expressed in words. But this is only one expression. In the Christian tradition contemplative prayer is considered to be the pure gift of God. It is the opening of mind and heart — our whole being — to God, the ultimate mystery, beyond thoughts, words, and emotions. Through grace we open our awareness to God, whom we know by faith is within us, closer than breathing, closer than thinking, closer than choosing, closer than consciousness itself.”

Care and Nurture
World Food Day Is This Saturday, Oct. 16
More than 73 billion people (almost 40 percent of the world's population) can't afford a healthy diet. The Food and Agricultural Organization for the United Nations advises that the food you choose and the way you consume it affects your health and that of our planet. The food we choose and the way we produce, prepare, cook, and store it makes us an integral part of the way an agri-food system works.
How can we make a difference? We need to influence what is produced by increasing our demand for sustainably produced nutritious foods, and at the same time be more sustainable in our daily actions. First and foremost is to reduce food loss and waste. We also have the responsibility to spread the word, building awareness about the importance of a healthy and sustainable lifestyle. Efforts to mitigate climate change, environmental degradation, and our wellbeing all depend on it. We need to activate a food movement that advocates for ambitious change, hence events like World Food Day this Saturday, Oct. 16, were established.
