Construction Industry Report – Economic activity will remain high in 2023 despite a slowdown

Activity in the construction industry will have reached a historic peak in 2022, with 210 million hours worked, a 7% increase over 2021. Although a slowdown is expected in 2023, activity will remain high, with a forecast total of 202 million hours worked. This 4% variation is explained mainly by the economic conjuncture and the completion of major construction sites.

This information is contained in Perspectives 2023, a document published today by the Commission de la construction du Québec (CCQ).

Toronto waterfront office tower earns highest level of LEED certification

A 675,000 sq. ft. office tower on Toronto’s waterfront has achieved Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Platinum certification from the Canada Green Building Council (CaGBC) – the highest level of certification.

Naloxone kits to be required in Ontario

Employers in Ontario will need to provide Naloxone kits in workplaces considered to be at high risk for opioid overdoses as of June 1. The province’s labour minister, Monte McNaughton, explained that this is the latest in the government’s efforts to curb the risk of opioid overdoses. Government figures indicate that there were more than 2,800 opioid-related deaths in 2019.

As part of the government’s new mandate, employers must provide a naloxone kit when they should reasonably know there is a risk of an overdose on a site, or if there is a risk of an employee or other worker overdosing while performing work for the employer.

Changes coming to Ontario tech curriculum in bid to meet labour needs

High school students in Ontario will learn from a rebooted technology curriculum starting next year, the province’s education minister says, part of a push to equip them with up-to-date skills needed in a range of skilled trades wrestling with labour shortages.

The revision follows others the Ford government has made in recent years to mathematics and science courses, which included ditching a split into applied and advanced subject streams in Grade 9 that was blamed for pushing racialized students away from higher education.
