Out-of-School Youth Program Success!

In the month of August 2023, a young individual we will call “J” came into the Madison County Career Center to get assistance with seeking employment opportunities.

When talking with J, it was obvious that he would be eligible for our out of school youth program. Through the out of school youth program, workforce development counselors and outreach coordinators were able to assist him by providing him with supportive services such as, clothing for work, drivers training, and paying for the cost of getting his driver’s license.

In addition, the career center was also able to provide him with the opportunity to complete a youth work experience. The youth work experience provides youths the opportunity to gain experience in an area of their interest. In this case, J was specifically interested in working with a local tree care service.

J ended up completing his 195 hours of youth work experience at the business. and this actually turned into J landing a permanent job with them!

Congratulations, J!

This is a perfect example to show what our Career Centers can offer eligible individuals who need assistance with employment and more. Not only do our Career Centers offer work experiences, but also on-the-job training, assistance with education/certifications, career counseling, and more!

The WDB's Disability Resource Coordinator (DRC) Nicole Sortino has been officially credentialed as a

Work Incentive Practitioner through Cornell University

The Work Incentive Practitioner Credential (WIP-C™) course discusses the Social Security Administration’s (SSA’s) disability and return-to-work programs and work incentive provisions prescribed in the Social Security Act and the Ticket to Work and Work Incentives Improvement Act of 1999. It also covers the work incentives and impact of earnings on other federal benefit programs that provide benefits to individuals with disabilities. The course offers primary and continuing education for work incentive practitioners on the interplay of these benefit programs and the impact of earned income upon each, explaining how to properly advise individuals with disabilities about the impact of earnings on their benefits portfolio. DRC Sortino will be certified for the next 5 years.

Ms Sortino says, “With this new credential I will be able to confidently provide benefits advisement to SSI/SSDI beneficiaries who are interested in returning to work. Navigating Social Security can be arduous and overwhelming, and the fear of losing benefits can hinder many beneficiaries from returning to work. By obtaining my WIP-C I am now able to empower beneficiaries in their return to work efforts and connect them with the resources they need to be successful in the workforce.”

Congratulations, Nicole!

Welcome Sarah Barcomb,

Building Pathways to Infrastructure Jobs Grant Director!

A little About Sarah:

"Hello, my name is Sarah Barcomb and I am the new Project Director for Building Pathways to Infrastructure Careers. Though my college experience was aimed at Elementary Education, I graduated and fell right into grant work.

"I have worked on grants for the County, WDB, and MVCC. It is nice to come full circle and work again with the WDB. I look forward to working with all of you and brainstorming different ways we can make a positive change in the areas we serve."

Welcome, Sarah!

Partnership Success Story!

Last month, a Regional Apprenticeship Development and Readiness (RADAR) grant project client who had been placed in the construction industry lost his job due to a seasonal lay off.

He called WDB Business Services Representative Caitlin McSorley to see if she knew of any other jobs that he could pick up in the meantime as his wife and children were coming to live with him from Trinidad in December!

At that time there was not much to offer him, but the next day Vecino Construction called Caitlin to see if she could help with a rare staffing instance out of the area. The company had a need for a property maintenance manager at one of their properties in Troy, NY. The job came with an apartment in the building that was being managed!

Caitlin immediately thought of the RADAR client she had spoken with the day before. It was a long-shot but she made the call to see if he might be interested in relocating for this position. He was interested!!

Our client had a phone interview with Vecino Construction the next week and was offered the position right away! The best part of the story, is that our client now has a career and a safe place for his family to come home to when they arrive in December! Vecino Construction also assisted our client in his move to Troy and he started his new position the second week in October.

Oneida County Re-Entry Taskforce Program News

The NYS Division of Criminal Justice Service (DCJS) funds 20 re-entry task force programs across the state. The Oneida County Re-Entry Task Force (OC RTF) is pleased to announce that WDB has been approved for another contract year with DCJS to provide transitional supports to criminal justice involved individuals returning to the community from state incarceration on community supervision.

WDB Re-Entry Service Coordinator Katilyn Traxel and Project Director Veronica Miller traveled to Albany in October for intensive DCJS CRTF Program Coordinator and Staff training to mark the new program year. We were able to meet and greet DCJS and DOCCS state representatives, and other CRTF staff representatives from across the state. (Photo Above.)

More than 35 individuals from the state’s 20 Task Forces attended the staff training in Albany from October 18 to 19. The workshop provided opportunities to collaborate, network and receive a refresher on the Task Force workplan and key aspects of the model. DCJS and the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision staff facilitated the workshop, which covered core workplan objectives, client engagement, trauma, program and intervention fidelity, as well as building relationships with co-chairs and the Department Of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS).

Project Director Veronica Miller says, "We look forward to another successful year and the opportunity to provide necessary support services to parolees as they return to Oneida County to rebuild their lives."
