March 21st – World Down Syndrome Day - The United Nations have celebrated the 21st World Down Syndrome Day since 2012. Each year the UN holds a special session to discuss a theme relevant to people with Down syndrome. WDSD has its website: https://www.worlddownsyndromeday.org/. This year's theme is “With Us Not For Us.” The message of “With Us Not For Us is vital to a human rights-based approach to disability. Down syndrome International is committed to moving on from the outdated charity model of disability, where people with disability were treated as objects of charity, deserving of pity and relying on others for support. Instead, a human rights-based approach views people with disabilities as having the right to be treated fairly and have the same opportunities. An excellent way to celebrate is to talk about including people with Down syndrome in your school, workplace, faith community, or club. Please celebrate with positive messages about what people with DS can do rather than what they can’t do.
March 21st- International Day for Elimination of Racial Discrimination – This day has been observed annually by the United Nations General Assembly since 1966, remembering the peaceful demonstration that police fired upon in 1960 in Sharpeville, South Africa.
