A Message From Our Principal

Dear Tolt Families,

It has been great having our students on campus all five days this week and getting back into the rhythm of a full day of school after our recent winter weather. A few highlights this week included our ASB selling Kindness Kanes (candy canes with nice notes) during lunches, our 8th grade WEB leaders helping 6th grade students create friendship bracelets during Tolt Time, and last night’s wonderful band concert. More exciting things are coming up as our ASB has also organized tonight’s festive Glow Social, next week’s fun Spirit Week and next Thursday’s exciting Bear Cup Assembly.

Due to our school's layout, students regularly spend time outside before school, during passing periods, and during lunchtime. In consideration of the colder weather, please send your student to school with warm clothes (winter coat, hat, and/or gloves).

Our staff is committed to ensuring our students have time to rest, relax, and enjoy family and friends over our upcoming Winter Break. That means assignments will not be due after the break unless students had the opportunity to complete them before the break. Families are encouraged to set aside 20-30 minutes a day for their students to read during Winter Break. This is a great opportunity to reinforce at home that reading is fun!

We are pleased to announce the date of our 8th Grade Moving Up Ceremony. Tolt 8th graders will be celebrated on Thursday, June 22 at 7PM in the Cedarcrest High School gym. More details to come as it gets closer to this special event. Also, please note that since we had two days of school closures last week, the last day of school is now expected to be Friday, June 23. Finally, I hope everyone has a wonderful winter break December 19-January 2!

Go Bears!

Amie Karkainen, Principal

Military Family Verification

Dear Parent/Guardian,

The Military Family Verification window for the 2022-23 school year is open and will close Friday, January 6, 2023. Each year we are required by Washington State to survey our families as to whether or not they are currently active in the US Armed Forces, National Guard, or Reserves. This information is used to remove barriers to educational success imposed on children of military families because of frequent moves and deployment of their parents.

The survey must be completed for each student attending school within the district.

  1. To begin, log in to your Skyward Family Access account. (If you don't know your login credentials, contact Kim Piira at [email protected] or 425-844-4607).
  2. Choose an individual student from the dropdown. Once on a student's page, click on Go to 2022-23 Military Family Verification for [Your Student]. Then click 1. Verify Military Family Affiliation on the right and make the appropriate selection.
  3. After making your selection, click the Complete Step 1 and Move to Step 2 button at the bottom.
  4. Click Submit 2022-23 Military Family Verification to complete the process.
  5. Repeat for each Riverview student in your family.

Please contact Kim Piira at [email protected] or 425-844-4607 with questions. Thank you for your prompt attention to this request!

Tolt Time Friendship Bracelets

Our 8th grade WEB (Where Everybody Belongs) leaders, organized, instructed, and helped our 6th grade classes make friendship bracelets during this week's Tolt Time. Students were encouraged to give their bracelets to a friend--the theme was "kindness." Great job, WEB leaders and 6th graders contributing to our Tolt community in a fun way!

Band is a unique opportunity to experience music and the arts during the school day. Tolt offers six band classes for students in grades 6, 7, and 8. Our premier, debut and jazz band classes, led by Mr. Stone, learn, practice and perform select pieces throughout the year. Last night all the bands came together to showcase their hard work in a wonderful Winter Concert. Your support of the levy funds music education in Riverview schools--thank you!

Nurse's Corner

This year’s respiratory virus season has started earlier and is more severe with higher levels of influenza and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). It is so important for your student to stay home until any symptoms of respiratory virus, stomach virus, or general wellbeing are significantly improved and must be fever free for 24 hours without any fever-reducing medications. For more information about preventing the spread of flu visit knockoutflu.org. If your student has COVID symptoms, they should obtain a COVID test and notify Nurse Rachel with a positive result. Please keep your student home until they are well enough to be at school and learning!

As we look forward to gathering for the holidays, it is important to follow prevention strategies to help us enjoy our time together. Here’s some ideas to stay healthy during this holiday season:

  • Consider wearing a mask in crowded or poorly ventilated settings.
  • Obtain your flu and COVID vaccine/booster.
  • Stay home when sick and use appropriate level of care.
  • Wash hand often and avoid touching eyes, mouth, and nose.
  • Consider taking a COVID test prior to gathering.
  • Practice food safety – wash hands, keep food at correct temp, prepare food correctly, and disinfect surfaces.

Thank you for helping us keep everyone at school healthy!
