Celebrating 9 Years in the Give!Guide
|
Have you heard that the CanDo Give!Guide is celebrating it's 10th Anniversary this year? Ten years of lifting up local nonprofits right here in Napa County, and making local giving easy.
To help celebrate the 10th Anniversary (and our NINTH year participating!), we have set our fundraising goal to $12,000 from 110 individual donors.
We kickstarted our campaign with a very generous offer from our Board of Directors to match the first $1,950 in donations. Thanks to your generosity, we met that match in one week!
If you are looking for a good reason to donate, check out these highlights from 2022. Every $10 helps!
- Staff provided environmental education to over 1,500 youth, including students from all of Napa County's alternative high schools, Boys & Girls Club members in St Helena and American Canyon, and Enchanted Hills Campers from LightHouse for the Blind's STEM camp
- We removed 6,500+ pounds of trash from the Napa River and its tributaries with the help of over 800 volunteers
- We launched Million Trees Napa, a new community-based program focused on stewarding our forests for the next generation
- We helped 34 farmers establish habitat on their properties to benefit threatened monarch butterflies and other key species
- We helped another 30 farmers develop a strategy to sequester more carbon and become more climate resilient with the guidance of a carbon farm plan
- We provided Spanish-language training on soil health and irrigation efficiency to over 300 farmworkers
|
Stay tuned throughout the month as we highlight specific projects and partners from the past year.
And once again, every single donor will receive a locally-sourced, responsibly-grown bouquet of flowers from our amazing friends at The Monkey Flower Group. Feeling like donating $50 or more? You'll get FIVE bouquets!

Rainfall Summary - Oct + Nov
from Paul Blank, Napa RCD Environmental Scientist
|
November brought the first rain of Water Year 2022-23 (beginning October 1) to the Napa Valley, with two small storms and four to five days of measurable rainfall. Rain totals at the County ALERT monitoring stations ( napa.onerain.com) were below average for the month, ranging between 1.0 inch in the City of Napa and 2.5 inches at Mt. Veeder. These totals represent approximately 5% of mean annual precipitation. On average, we get 11% during the month of November, and have 16% of our annual rainfall by this time in the water year.
|
According to the National Weather Service, Napa County remains in severe to extreme drought due to this small annual deficit and the cumulative effects of multiple consecutive dry years. We will need more than average rainfall this winter to end drought conditions.

We love the rain we've seen falling the last week or so, and often find ourselves looking at creeks and streams during times of rain and during the dry summer months.
But what about those middle times, when creeks are just beginning to run in fall, or going dry in the spring?
If you live in Calistoga or St Helena and are looking for another reason to keep an eye on our streams, have we got a volunteer opportunity for you!
We are looking for volunteers that are specifically interested in being a Stream Watch Volunteer in the Calistoga area. There are about 6 sites that we would like to see monitored on a weekly basis. All you have to do is go to the site, take a photo, and then upload the photo to the website! Easy as 1-2-3!
If you're interested in being a Stream Watch Volunteer in Calistoga (or anywhere!) please contact Ashley@NapaRCD.org or 707-690-3117.

The Soil Hub Website Gets a
Makeover!
|
The North Coast Soil Hub Outreach Team, and specifically Hub Regional Coordinator Emilie Winfield, has been working hard to make sure the new design and layout of the North Coast Soil Hub website is both eye-catching and easy-to-navigate!
The Soil Hub website is intended to be a landing spot for growers throughout the region, and the new website makes resources, training announcements, and other information much more easily accessible.
All of us on the team hope you find the new website easy to use and filled with relevant resources!
