A Message

from MAYOR MARGOT GARANT

Happy Holidays Everyone!

I just wanted to pause for a moment and give thanks to all those who have served this beautiful community, as well as thank all the employees of our Village, our fire department, our first responders, the ambulance company, hospital staff, our school teachers and administrative staff, our parents, our children, and seniors. We did it—and we did it TOGETHER.

TWO PUBLIC HEARINGS IN JANUARY

Join us at the Board of Trustees meeting

There will be two public hearings at the January 3rd Port Jefferson Village Board of Trustees meeting.

The first one is to establish Station Street as a One Way Street, to prevent left turns onto Station Street from the LIRR lot and left or right turns onto Station Street from Oakland Avenue, to designate the LIRR egress into Station Street and the intersection of Station Street with Oakland Avenue as stop Intersections, to establish egress onto Station street from the LIRR parking lot as right turn only and to prevent parking, standing and stopping on Station Street.

The second one is to obtain citizens’ views and comments relative to the submission of an application to Empire State Development for financial assistance under the Restore NY Communities Initiative. This project includes the demolition and redevelopment of blighted parcels in the C2 Zoning District in the “Upper Port” area of the Village.

Join us at 6:00 pm on January 3rd at Village Hall.

PARKING CHANGES ON LOCAL STREETS

There's a new code in town, and it's creating safer streets.

The Village has enacted code changes to keep our residents safe. These changes prohibit parking along the West side of High Street between Williams Street at the North end and Myrtle Avenue at the South end.

Parking is now prohibited along the East side of Liberty Avenue for 435' South of the intersection of Liberty Avenue and Old Post Road.

Check out the maps below to see exactly where these changes are taking place. Happy trails to you!

LEAF PICKUP: GET A SECOND BITE OF THE APPLE

Additional options are available.

Thank you to the Department of Public Works (DPW) your efforts on the loose leaf pickup has been spectacular! Most of our streets have been cleaned up beautifully. The DPW team is still working on the west side of the Village and will adhere to the leaf pickup schedule. They come around once to your street for pickup. If you missed the pickup or have additional leaves, here are your other options -

  • Fill the large paper bags that can be purchased at the hardware store and leave them by the curb for the Village to pick up.

  • Or you can fill plastic bags and leave them for bulk pickup by your regular trash collection company. Check with your provider to find out the details about their bulk pickup.

It's great to have options!

from Deputy Mayor Kathianne Snaden

The holiday season is definitely one of my favorite times of the year. The beautiful decorations, time with family, and the holiday spirit brings joy to many. With all of the hustle and bustle, we continue our hard work on Village issues. The business Improvement District held a festive ceremony to light their new, large Christmas tree that we are happy to have as a staple during the holiday seasons to come. It's located on the corner of Main Street and East Broadway. Santa led the countdown, and when the tree was lit, the snow machine pumped beautiful snowflakes while attendees enjoyed hot chocolate from Starbucks and candy canes from the Frigate. It was a wonderful event for all!

The Architectural Review Committee has been reviewing applications from the Conifer II project, the old Deli building, and storefront signs from The Bar Method and Edward Jones, to name a few. The ARC works very hard on its recommendations to maintain a beautiful aesthetic throughout the Village.

Dressing up and attending the Dickens Festival is one of my favorite things to do this time of year. It started with a very heartfelt Lantern dedication to little Aida Ramonez, who we tragically lost last year. I was honored to be a part of the event with the Mayor, the school district, and Aida's family for a beautiful tribute and dedication of the lantern. We then went on to serve hot chocolate to our residents at the Village Center during resident night skating. It was wonderful to see all of the happy faces and cold noses!

Even though Saturday was a washout, I'm happy to report that parking for the event was up 10% over the weekend and that 50% of that Revenue is shared with the Arts Council. Always happy when we can support the Arts, and this collaboration is no exception.

Our Village shuttle moved over 200 people in and out of the Village on Sunday alone. Dickens 2022 was a clear success!

As we enter this season, I wish you and yours a happy and healthy holiday and a very prosperous new year!

Kathianne Snaden

Trustee

Deputy Mayor, Port Jefferson Village

THANK YOU, SCPD!

Your support helps keep our Village safe!

You are the guardians of our public safety, and we can't thank you enough for your support of our neighborhoods and Village events. We're incredibly grateful for your help with festivals, parades, and gatherings —you're always there to keep our beautiful Village safe. Their efforts help make our events run smoothly, allowing us to focus on what matters most: celebrating our Village and its history.

We hope you'll join us in supporting SCPD as they continue their mission of protecting this wonderful place we call home.

NEW SCPD INSPECTOR AND DEPUTY INSPECTOR

Village Administration meets with SCPD's 6th Precinct's new top brass.

We welcome the new SCPD 6th Precinct Inspector Joseph Condollf and Deputy Inspector Todd Barone. Mayor Garant, Deputy Mayor Snaden, and Village Clerk Sakovich met with the newly appointed inspectors to share current issues and potential future issues. The meeting was positive and productive, and we're excited to continue these conversations in the weeks, months, and years ahead. "We look forward to our continued cooperative relationship with Suffolk Police and the 6th precinct and hope our investments in technology systems such as our cameras, and now license plate reader capabilities will continue to fight and reduce crime in our Village." Mayor Garant commented.

We send a big THANK YOU to the 6th Precinct! They are the guardians of our public safety, and we can't thank them enough for their support in our neighborhoods and at Village events. "We're grateful for the effective working relationships we've developed with SCPD's 6th Precinct. Thanks to regular meetings and shared strategy, our Village is safer than ever." Deputy Mayor Snaden shares. “They are a big help with our festivals, parades, and events. Their efforts help make it all run smoothly, allowing us to focus on what matters most: celebrating our Village and its history." Deputy Mayor Snaden added.

We hope you'll join us in thanking SCPD as they continue their mission of protecting this wonderful place we call home.

CODE DEPARTMENT HONORS EXCELLENCE

Join us in thanking them.

We're so excited to announce this year's "Officer of the Year" and "Like a Rock Award." Each year, Code honors employees who shined brightly this past year.

This year, it was a unanimous vote by the Supervision staff at their November Supervisor Meeting: Corporal Jacob Blake was voted Officer of the Year. He also received praise from his peers, who said he always goes above and beyond, no matter what task is handed his way.

The Supervision staff was deadlocked between two highly regarded candidates for the Like a Rock Award. So they gave the award to both to share: Investigator Manny Kouroupakis and CO Joseph Caracci. The Like a Rock award recognizes those who show exemplary dedication, commitment, motivation, and leadership qualities while working within our Code department.

Congrats to all three on your excellent work ethic throughout the 2022 year.

AND THE WINNER IS…

Station Street

Thank you all for participating in our street naming survey. We are grateful that you joined in to name our newest street. Here are the results…

We had 134 entries

Station Street: 52 votes

Rail Road: 19 votes

Port Place: 19 votes

Depot Drive: 2 votes

Locomotion Lane: 7 votes

Our participants were very creative, and some write-in suggestions had us laughing out loud. The top performers in the hilarious category were Psycho Path and Roady McRoadface.

Others involved an homage to our schools with Royals Way and Port Royals Place.

Some of the entries wanted to showcase the exciting progress in the revitalization of upper Port, like Progress Place, Port Future Way, Revamp Path, and Revision Road.

Plenty had train and boat references, for example, Station Road, End of the Line Avenue, Crossings Avenue, Whistle Way, Cross Way, Tender Street (a tender is a coal car on a train), Starboard Street, and Square Rigger Place (a Square Rigger is a sailing vessel).

Our last category is based on the road location and our history - N Port Place, Welcome Way, Village Way, Gateway Drive, Upper Port Drive, Hospital Xpress, Park Place, Founders Way, and Sunken Meadow Drive.

We are so excited about the participation we received. It was great to get feedback from the community. Now, as we all pass the Station Street sign as we enter Port, we will have pride in our new road. It is the one that we named.

from Trustee Stan Loucks

The year 2022 will soon be over, and we will all be looking forward to the new year. This past year was very challenging ….. Covid was and still is creating many hardships, rising prices and shortages of material goods were present, and we endured this century's longest period of high temperatures with no rain. I feel we all need to be thankful that despite everything, we had a successful year. The Villages finances are in good shape. We've completed, or are in the process of completing, many major projects, including the repaving of streets, the renovations in Rocketship Park, the upcoming renovations to all of the walkways in the Jeanne Garant Harborfront Park, and many more. We look back to the terrific 4th of July parade, the many concerts, the Santa parade, and best of all - THE DICKENS FESTIVAL. The out coming of residents and visitors worldwide indicates that Port Jefferson is a unique and wonderful community.

I would be remiss if I did not discuss our Country Club, the parks, and the beaches. As we know, we haven't been able to have a tennis membership for the past year because of the bluff erosion adjacent to the club. However, we are presently working on a plan to restore tennis and add pickle Ball to the Club facilities. We hope to begin construction in early spring to build, minimally, 4 tennis courts and 3 pickleball courts. Regarding East beach, construction is well

underway, and we hope to access the area during the 2023 summer months. On the golf side - we have completely reconstructed the fairways that were severely damaged by the extended draught and the onsite shortage of irrigation. The course will be in excellent

shape in the spring of 2023. We have hired Larry Scortichini, our new assistant golf professional, who comes to us with 20+ years of experience at high end clubs. When you see Larry, introduce yourself and welcome him to your club.

We will install GPS systems in our golf cart fleet for the coming season. These devices have many features that will enhance your time on the course (yardages to the greens, yardages to bunkers, the ability to order food, the ability to call for help, and many more). Additionally, you will see a redesigned Pro Shop, a new membership office, new patios on many tee areas, scheduled social events using our new BB and fire pit area, and many more Club improvements.

I want to thank the entire Country Club and the Parks Department staff for everything they do. Special thanks to Jake Anderson, Larry Scortichini, Pat Sullivan, Jeff Welschar, Danielle Condia, Dave Melious, Lisa Perry, and the Country Club Management Advisory Committee (CCMAC)

WISHING EVERYONE A WONDERFUL HOLIDAY SEASON AND A HEALTHY AND HAPPY NEW YEAR!

 BEST, STAN

DICKENS FESTIVAL LANTERN DEDICATION

Honoring a loving young girl and supporting our Village family.

Friends, family, and community gathered on Friday, December 2nd, during the Charles Dickens Festival to dedicate a lantern in honor of Aida Ramonez. A beautiful young girl who was very dear to this community. Our community continues to come together for the family; this is the latest example. Mayor Margot Garant beautifully shared the feeling at the dedication, "I see there are many of her classmates out here tonight and know when one family hurts, we all hurt. We can't think of a more beautiful thing than celebrating life. Look around you, look at all the people in your life and in this community and be so very grateful for what we have here together.” The inscription on Aida's lantern reads, "In loving memory of Aida Esperanza Ramonez - Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened.”

Aida's grandfather Ramon expressed his gratitude, "I want to thank the community of Port Jefferson. The love and kindness that we have felt from you. Losing someone so young and so precious has been difficult. But with the support of a community like this makes it a lot easier. We are very, very grateful. And we thank you from our hearts."

The Port Jefferson School District and community raised the money for not only the lantern dedication but anything raised beyond the dedication will go to a scholarship in her name.

It's tradition each year at the lantern dedications that students participate by reading a poem as a part of their curriculum. This poem was special. Written by Nicole M. O’Neil and chosen with Aida in mind. Students Luca Caltagirone and Blake Weaver eloquently shared the touching poem "Family is like a Circle.”

Mayor Garant shared. "I watched this beautiful community come up and deliver flowers in 20-below weather at Aida’s memorial. This community is strong, and we're here to support the Ramonez family still. Every time we see this beautifully lit lantern, you'll have a very special place to sit by the harbor and honor her spirit."

DICKENS DAZZLES

Our 26-year tradition kicks off the holiday season

Port Jefferson is a town of holiday cheer. This year, the 26th annual Charles Dickens Festival brought together the best of Victorian England with the local shops and eateries to create an unforgettable experience for us all.

It was a weekend of whimsical enchantment, from the Main Street Parade on Saturday morning to the closing parade, and holiday tree lighting on Sunday, and all the events in between.

Santa's new location in The Village Center was the perfect place to have a friendly chat with the Jolly ol' Elf and take a few holiday pictures. Families could even get an 'Elf'ie with his mischievous elves in the workshop. The Festival of Trees was stunning, as always, and is available to view the entire month of December. The performances from roving troupes of Dickens street characters, and a cappella performances by choirs and harmony groups, dazzled and engaged the festival visitors. But we can’t forget the ice skating at the Village Center and the horse and buggy rides; they are always a favorite!

It was more than a celebration of Christmas past; it was an immersive experience in Victorian England. From Oliver Twist's Artisan Square to Tiny Tim's Train Station, to Fezziwigs Dance Party, and the Christmas Carol Radio Show, the performers enthralled the audiences and left them with all of the joy of the holiday season.

Join us next year and experience why the festival has been voted the "Best Annual Festival" for the last three years. The events are open to the public, and most attractions are free of charge, so everyone – from the very young to the young at heart can join in the fun. We look forward to celebrating the most wonderful time of the year with you again next year!

from Trustee Lauren Sheprow

Oh Ho Ho

The holiday season is filled with opportunities for giving and gathering with friends and family, colleagues and acquaintances. This holiday season is my first as a Trustee for Port Jefferson Village and so far it’s been pretty inspiring. It kicked off with the Lantern dedication at the Fifth Season, honoring Port Jeff student Aida Ramonez (see more coverage in this edition of the eReport), followed by the spectacular spectacle of Residents’ Night at the Village Center where residents of every age happily mingled on and off the ice skating rink, and enjoyed free hot chocolate, cookies and brownies served up by the dedicated staff in the Village Center (and some Village Trustees who elbowed their way in to help).

The Village Center is revealing itself as the heartbeat of Village educational, recreational and cultural experience. This is a known fact to many, but I’m learning more every day about how robust and welcoming this facility and its staff is to our community. It’s where Village Historian, Chris Ryon (a volunteer), and Village Archivist, Sue Orifici maintain artifacts and documents important to the Village’s living history. It’s where families entrust their children in an enriching Before and After School program. It’s where fundraisers and family parties have a venue for a reasonable price and a million-dollar view.

It’s where local artists can showcase and exhibit their artwork with the help of Sue Orifici and a team of dedicated volunteers. It’s where BettyAnn Maringiello coordinates the many bus trips to various cultural destinations including upcoming excursions to the Botanical Gardens (12/29/22) and to NYC for Camelot on Broadway (3/19/23). The activities listed here represent just the tip of the iceberg... It just works. It’s amazing, and they make it look easy. (I assure you, it’s anything but easy.)

Most recently, as a guest at a Holiday Luncheon of the Senior Club Program group led by Beth Rothstein (see below: pictured far right, center row) and under the direction of Recreation Manager Renee Lemmerman (back row, center), I met many of the participants in our popular and burgeoning programs which include Sittersize, Book Club and Watercolor Painting. It was a wonderful turnout and I look forward to watching this program grow under Beth’s engaging leadership.

Over the next few months, our newly appointed Parks and Recreation Advisory Council will become thoroughly involved in helping to shape and grow some of the programs hosted there and elsewhere in Port Jefferson and to support the very lean team expertly guiding this massive ship. This Council is a dedicated group of residents chomping at the bit to roll up their sleeves and get to work, and we are grateful for their involvement.

THE HOLIDAYS ARE UPON US, AND OUR WONDERFUL SENIORS ARE CELEBRATING!

On Wednesday, our Seniors Club Program at The Village Center celebrated the holidays! After a Covid break, this amazing group is back better than ever. They've been meeting since April and have been having fun with watercolor art classes, Sittercise (exercise) classes, book clubs, and card games. The club has a wide range of activities to keep our seniors engaged and happy. The club held its Holiday Luncheon on the 3rd floor in the Sail Loft room with one of the best views in the Village.

This amazing group is free for residents and $10 for non-residents. If you're a senior or know one that wants to sign up for classes, CLICK HERE to sign up on our website.

"Your Christmas tree can be the gift that keeps on giving! While this type of dune restoration is not applicable for Port Jefferson erosion efforts, the south shore's Smith Point County Park is accepting trees for reuse, protecting Long Island dunes. Anyone interested in this environmentally-friendly alternative to disposal should call 631-852-1314 in early January to confirm when trees can be dropped off.”

from Trustee Rebecca Kassay

The final weeks of the year are full of reminiscing and merriment with friends and family, and in between these joyous moments, we're squeezing in fruitful meetings and efforts to make sure that the new year gets off to a strong start in Port Jefferson Village.

As the Commissioner of Environmental Sustainability, almost all of my work circles back to flood mitigation in the Village. In the past weeks, I attended an inspiring regional coastal sustainability webinar, met with Town of Brookhaven representatives to discuss collaborative efforts, and continued work with the Climate Resilience Plan grant team. In early 2023, look for an invitation to the first of three public presentations on Village Climate Resilience: your involvement and feedback will add to the success of the plan!

Speaking of plans, the Village has taken

Speaking of plans, the Village has taken another step towards a Village-wide walkability study. Trustee Snaden and I met with Hayduk Engineering to discuss the Village's vision; a proposal from the firm, expected in the coming month, will inform and help to direct the Village's next steps towards this goal. Meanwhile, I invite you to email with your perspectives, concerns, and hopes regarding safer streets in Port Jefferson Village.

While we want to savor each season, it can be comforting to think of longer, warmer days on these chilly winter nights. With that in mind, those interested in entering the lottery for a raised bed at the Beach Street Community Garden can submit their applications during the month of January. Information is posted at: portjeff.com/communitygarden

Merry and bright wishes to you and yours for this holiday season. May 2023 be our best year yet!

Enthusiastically,

Rebecca Kassay

Port Jefferson Village Trustee

DEC PERMIT AWARDED FOR THE REMOVAL OF INVASIVE PLANTS

The benefits are extensive!

A healthy ecosystem benefits our Village exponentially. Trustee Kassay and Mill Creek Watershed steward Bob Laravie are leading the charge for restoring our Mill Creek Waterway and fostering healthy biodiversity. The Village has recently received a permit from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation to do just that.

The Mill Creek waterway starts as a small spring at Brook Road near Caroline Avenue Park, winds its way across Barnum Avenue, and runs behind Village Hall, ending as it dumps into the Long Island Sound.

These restoration efforts will benefit all living things in Port Jefferson Village: residents strolling by will enjoy a more beautiful landscape as ecologically important native plants will have more room to grow along Mill Creek, and wildlife will thrive on these native plants, which provide them with necessary food and shelter.

"Part of Mill Creek functions as a tidal estuary, which many marine species need to begin and complete their lifecycle; our Mill Creek Steward, Robert Laravie, identified baby eels in the creek earlier this year!" Explains Trustee Rebecca Kassay. Citing evidence of the importance of the restoration efforts.

With stubborn invasive species like Japanese Knotweed and Phragmites, removal can feel like a Sisyphean task (Are you up on your Greek Mythology?) Volunteers will need to strategically remove growth over many years until the energy in the plant's roots is spent. Proper removal techniques also help prevent the invasive species from continuing to spread. The Village hopes to coordinate with residents, students, and local environmental groups to help with this effort! The permit expires in 2026, so it is imperative to start the undertaking.

"Mill Creek is an important part of Port Jefferson Village's heritage. I look forward to rolling up my sleeves alongside fellow residents as we work to celebrate nature, history, and beauty with this restoration effort. Enthusiastically shares Trustee Kassay.

"If you see someone like this, it is me removing Japanese Knotweed canes," says Bob Laravie. Why not volunteer to help with these critical efforts and you too can look like Bob.

THE BID's TREE LIGHTING CEREMONY WAS A BLAST!

A new tradition to bring joy to the holiday season

The Business Improvement District (BID) organized a joyful tree lighting ceremony on the corner of Main and Broadway. The 14-foot panel tree was lit by Santa himself. The event was free to attend and open to all ages! We had photos with Santa, a children's choir, candy canes from the Frigate, Starbucks hot chocolate, and of course, an artificial snow maker to make it feel like winter had come early.

Join BID next year for a fun and festive way to celebrate the holiday season!

Meet our team. Their stories are inspiring, and they provide excellent service to all who live here and visit. We will highlight a new professional every month and introduce you to the most amazing and talented individuals that make Port Jefferson Village so special. These are people who bring their experience and dedication every single day.  When they say it takes a Village, they’re talking about the people of Port Jefferson Village!

We are so proud to introduce you to BettyAnn Maranngiello. She is a treasure to our Village and an inspiration to everyone she meets.

When you walk into the Village Center when she is on staff, BettyAnn will welcome you—and that's been true since the opening of the building in 2005! You will see her smiling face, ready to help you with anything she can. She truly enjoys meeting people, and as a retired Kindergarten teacher and an adjunct professor at CW Post, she has masterfully learned how to transfer her skills from one setting to another.

BettyAnn has never met a stranger. Once you meet her, you are instantly a friend for life. She runs her life based on her deep faith. She is a constant learner, which is another reason why she is an asset to the Village center and our community. She is an original member of the Port Jefferson Harbor Education and Arts Conservancy that does so much for our Village, including restoring Rocketship Park. But that is just one of the many hats she wears. Have you ever wondered who schedules all of the Broadway and NYC trips our Village offers? She is your gal. It is worth trying out if you haven't taken one of those trips! A lot of the trips sell out - so book early.

We can go on and on and on about how much of an asset BettyAnn is to the Village and our community, but we hope that you will meet her and experience her grace.

BettyAnn has a nickname around here - "BA, the beautiful," Because that is exactly who she is. She is beautiful on the inside and out! But why stop with one nickname when so many more apply? She is also BA the Beloved, the Boundless, the Brilliant and the Blessed!

Thank you, BettyAnn. Your presence in our Village is one of the things that makes Port Jefferson so special!

SEE SOMETHING, SAY SOMETHING
Protecting our streets and parks is a top priority. Our 'See Something - Say Something' campaign is designed to make you a part of the solution. Signs are being posted throughout Main Street, in both uptown and downtown areas. The phone number of the supervising Code Officer is prominently displayed on each sign. We encourage residents to report any suspicious activity or other hazards. If you see something unusual or witness any concerning behavior, call (631) 774-0066. The Code Enforcement Bureau will secure the scene immediately, investigate the situation and work with SCPD. Our Code officers have a well-established relationship with SCPD. Many of them are retired, active or auxiliary officers. We also have security cameras on our streets. SCPD’s real-time crime center is tied into our camera system and can monitor them when necessary. All crimes are reported to Suffolk County Police. It will take all of us to be proactive and diligent to continue with the good work that has already been established.
