Friday Devotional:
Psalm 27
I remember the first time I sang "Wait for the Lord" (ELW 262) as part of a Taizé service. The sanctuary was dark and candlelit, and worshipers were scattered about, sitting on pillows and in the pews. As one does in such a service, we sang the song over and over, echoing the psalmist's refrain: "Wait for the LORD. . . ; wait for the LORD!"
This quiet, reverent, slow, repetitive style was new to me. I was used to every moment of worship being filled with music or words. Any chance for silence was filled by the organist. But here I was, in a community that valued silence and stillness. I was pulled into a rhythm that kept us breathing, praying, and singing together.
These opportunities to rest, either individually or communally, go against our compulsive busy-ness, don't they? From the Taizé community's meditative singing, we can learn that a few words, sung many times, can relax our whole being and bring us into God's presence.
Faithfull God, through our words and music, may our anxious hearts find rest and rhythm in you. Amen.
