PRINCIPAL'S DESK

December 9, 2022

Greeting Tiger Students and Families,

Wow, where did 2022 go? I am amazed to look at the calendar and see that we are close to the end the 2022, and I a even more amazed with how well our student and staff have come together to make this school year flow very smoothly. As we continue to assure that LC is the most safe and secure school where all kids and staff can be successful. We have been asking all students to always have their student identifications on their possession. Students, parents, guardians, and community members are asked to continue using the main doors to enter the building before school and during the school day. If students arrive after the start of the school day, they will need push the doorbell and wait for a response from a staff member. They will be asked to show their students identification cards to the camera. We have other measures in place to assure that all kids who belong at LC will get access to their school and their learning. I ask for their patience and support as well as patience and support from our families. Safety and security for all is my top priority! We will revisit how our systems, processes, and procedures are working and adjust in a timely manner and communicate adjustments and expectations with students, staff, and families.

Another area where our students have been working very hard to build community and connections is partnering with one of our feeder elementary schools for the holiday season. We have been working with Grant Elementary and have had this partnership for the past few years, providing a Christmas gift for each student at Grant. We could use your help! We need help with the acquisition of gifts for their students. If you are willing to purchase gifts or donate funds for us to go purchase gifts, please contact Andrew Lipsker at andrewL@spokaneschools.org or myself at ivanc@spokaneschools.org. Andrew is our Associate Student Body (ASB) teacher who works with our leadership students. Any support would be greatly appreciated. We plan to deliver the gifts to Grant on Friday December 16, so if you can help, please connect with us as soon as possible. We would like to have everything we need by Wednesday, December 14. It is so cool to the smiles on the faces of the kids when they receive and open their gift!

Parents and guardians, please be sure to check your email and text messages as communication went out to families regarding the “hoax, swatting” incident. Our student and staff handled the situation very well, students and staff were safe, and we were able to support students who wanted to go home for the day and students who wanted to remain at school. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to email me at ivanc@spokaneschools.org or call me at (509) 354-6888.

As always, I appreciate your partnership and that you entrust us with your kids,

Mr. Ivan W. Corley

Principal

Please help us with the Giving Tree!

LC is continuing with our wonderful holiday tradition to provide a gift ($5-$10) to every Grant Elementary student (preK-6th grade). Students and staff can pull tag from giving tree near the Public Office with grade and gender of student they wish to purchase a gift, or you can donate cash and we'll buy the gifts.

The Giving Tree runs to December 14. If you wrap your gift, please make sure the tag is attached so we know the grade and gender for the gift. We'll deliver the gifts to Grant on December 16.

Connect with Principal Corley

I would like to invite parents/guardians to join me for a new LC Parent Advisory Group.

We will meet the 4th Monday of each month (next meeting January 23) from 6:00-7:00pm in the LC Commons. I hope to see your there!

TEACHING & LEARNING

2nd Semester planning is underway. We have built the 2nd semester classes and have started rolling students into those courses for the February 6 start of 2nd semester. When the rollover process begins, students will notice that 2nd semester Teams will begin appearing in their Teams list and the classes will appear in PowerSchool. Because almost all of our courses are full year, we will automatically register students for their 2nd semester classes. If your student needs a schedule adjustment, please contact the counselor to discuss options.

Registration for next year. In late January, we will begin the process for selecting classes for next year. We will use a number of Advisory periods to share information with students to help them with their selections. We will also share the information in the LC News so that parents are connected to the opportunities available. Our goal is to have schedules finalized before summer and there will be many opportunities to make changes throughout the process.

STUDENT SERVICES

Happy Friday from the Student Services Team!

Next week will be our last week of school for 2022! Winter has arrived in spectacular fashion this year. Please plan your bus routes to accommodate for any delays due to construction or weather. It may mean taking an earlier bus to ensure your on-time arrival. STA has a live route map and trip planning features that will help you plan for slower travel times and possible route detours with the ever-changing weather.

We would like to remind our students to please dress appropriately for the outdoor temperatures. If you need any clothing, coats, sweatshirts, etc., please let a staff member know and we can check out our Tiger Closet to help keep you warm.

The winter season can also be a difficult time for some emotionally and mentally. If you find yourself struggling, please reach out to your counselor, a trusted adult, or any staff member so we can provide you with help and resources.

Reminders/Updates:

  • SEE Something SAY Something is coming in a digital reporting format. Be on the lookout for upcoming information. Until then, please continue to tell a trusted staff member if you have any concerns of safety or inappropriate behavior.
  • STUDENT IDs: Any student arriving after the start of the school day (8:00 AM) will be required to present their student ID upon arrival to gain entry into the school. While it is not district or school policy that students wear their IDs, it is policy that they have them on their person while attending school or school events.
  • TWO Points of Entry ONLY: Thank you for your patience as we adjust to our two points of entry policy. Student and staff safety is our number one priority. Students and persons visiting the school will only be allowed to enter through two approved points on campus: the main front entrance and the commons entrance (ADA compliant entrance) both located on 4th Ave. DO NOT OPEN DOORS FOR ANYONE. Rather direct them to one of the approved entrances where we have intercoms, and an office staff member can let them in. All visitors MUST report to the public office to check in and obtain a pass. Please have an ID ready when entering. Thank you for your patience as we strive to create an even safer LC.
  • Vape Detectors: With the impeding installation and programming of our newly arrived vape detectors, we would like to remind students of behavioral expectations in the restroom and the disciplinary action should a detector be set off. All students leaving the restroom during or after a vape detector is activated will be subjected to search for prohibited items. Students found with prohibited items will undergo disciplinary measures. Please be mindful of your fellow students and leave such items at home.
  • Attendance and Tardies: As we approach the upcoming holiday season, please bear in mind that students missing school due to a family trip, or any known extended absences must have a pre-arranged absence form on file that can be obtained in the attendance office. Parents may not PRQ their student for any reason other than the district approved excused absences/tardies. If your student is absent, please call on the same day or send your student with their valid excuse to be submitted to the office upon return to school.  Our attendance policy is in accordance with the district policies and can be found in the upcoming student handbook and was presented during last week’s advisory lessons. We take the safety of our students and staff seriously. Unauthorized movement onto and from campus jeopardizes our ability to maintain a safe environment. If an absence needs to be excused, please do so through our attendance office 509-354-6968. 3122 Excused and Unexcused Absences (spokaneschools.org)
  • Lunch policies: LC is a CLOSED campus. Students are not permitted to leave campus during lunch. Parents may NOT excuse their student to leave campus during lunch. Allowing students to leave jeopardizes the safety and security of the student and the campus and is not permitted. Students, please clean up your mess after lunch. Most of you have been doing an exceptional job!
  • Students interested in participating in a Student Life committee focused on school wide culture, encouraging positive behaviors, enhancing LC spirit, increasing inclusivity, giving students a voice, and building a strong positive LC community please email Mrs. Glines with your name, grade, and brief explanation as to why you would like to be involved to: rachelgl@spokaneschools.org. Our first meeting will be held next week. Date and time TBD.

Have a wonderful weekend and we will see all of you on Monday morning...on time (9:00am) last Monday of 2022😊!!!

Sincerely,

Brandon Bouge

Where is the Passing with Pizza? In the Commons. Students will be grouped by the topic they are needing to work on.

Are there snacks for the students?

Yes, there will be snacks for students who sign in, stay, and work. Pizza will be served at 4:15.

Is there transportation at 4:30? Currently, the only transportation available is the city bus that all students can ride for free if they get their STA rider’s license.

What subjects can I get help with? There will be Mathematics, Science, and English teachers available and Student Tutors who can help in Mathematics, Science, Social Students, World Language, and English

How do I attend? Drop in after school or talk to your counselor.

Can I leave early? If you are leaving the school, you are free to leave whenever you are finished. You will not be allowed to roam the building or return to the building if you leave early.

Do I need to come every day? No, you only need to come on days when you have work you need to complete or that you need help to complete. You can come as often as you need.

My teacher/parent/counselor recommended that I attend Passing with Pizza, will they be notified I attended? When you sign in your attendance is logged. Your teacher/counselor can check a spreadsheet for attendance.

Graduation Honors

At graduation, all Spokane Public Schools use the same Latin Honors system to honor our top graduates. We will identify our Latin Honors students at the end of 1st semester. Here are the frequently asked questions about the Latin Honors System.

How will the Latin Honors system work? This system recognizes the top students at each high school using weighted grade point averages. Students have the ability to get three different levels of recognition: Summa Cum Laude, Magna Cum Laude, and Cum Laude. These are the same designations that colleges across the nation use to recognize top students. These designations would honor approximately 3 percent (Summa), 5 percent (Magna) and 12 percent (Cum Laude) of our current senior class for each category.

How are grades weighted?

  • Weighted grades are calculated by providing higher points for grades earned in Honors courses and still higher points for grades earned in AP courses:
  • Unweighted Courses: A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1, F=0
  • Honors Courses: A=4.5, B=3.5, C=2.5, D=1.5, F=0
  • AP Courses A=5, B=4, C=3, D=2, F=0
  • Because SPS uses a +/- grading scale, the above table is only a sampling of options. The easiest way for students to calculate the weighted grade point average is to add .5 to the GPA for honors classes and a 1.0 for Advanced Placement classes.

Student Drop-off/Pick-Up: 4th Avenue in front of LC's main building and Commons is school bus zone until buses leave. Please do not park on the south side of 4th to pick up your student. Parents picking up students will either need to arrive after 2:40pm (when the buses leave) or pick up students on Stevens, Wall, 5th, or in front of the Fieldhouse. Thank you!

Student Parking: LC students can park in the two freeway lots (in front of the Field House and in front of the church to the east). Be sure to display your student parking permit to avoid getting a ticket in the student lots. Student parking permits can be purchased in the Business Office for $5. The lots under the freeway directly in front of the main building and the Commons and the parking garage are only for LC staff and are monitored and ticketed for cars without staff permits.
