Cultivating Good Study Habits Early

Brian Coloritre, TTS Advisor South

Did you know that students who practice good study habits are much more prepared for challenging assignments that await them in High School?  Good study habits are a crucial part of every students academic journey.  Developing these habits will allow you to get better grades, test scores, and even help you develop a routine that will benefit you in your everyday life. Here are some ways you can practice good study habits:

  • Establish an area to study that is quiet and allows you to concentrate on your task
  • Make sure your phone is somewhere where it won’t distract you from your work
  • Set aside a time each day that you plan to study for; example: (I’ll study everyday afterschool at 4:00pm for 1 hour).
  • Take good notes in class, so when you get home you can summarize what you have learned
  • Stay organized; use a planner to write down test dates or when homework is due

Remember, practice makes perfect when it comes to study habits. The more you develop a studying routine the more ready you will be for High School and beyond. Taking steps to help you with your study habits is not only setting you up for success in school, but also life in general.

In fact, students who excel in 9th grade are far more likely to graduate high school and enroll in college. Even better, these students are more likely to remain in college beyond their freshman year than are students who struggled through their first year of high school.
