Can you believe that this Friday, October 13, is the end of Quarter 1? As we look ahead to the next quarter, we are looking for volunteers, even just 15-20 minutes a week, for mentoring, tutoring, media center, cafeteria, car rider line, etc. or your talent/skill that you can offer to help us support all of our Jets’ academic growth and safety. Please let me know if you would like to contribute a little of your time over the next nine weeks— we would greatly appreciate your help.
Families, we value you and would like your feedback for our Quarter 1 Family Survey. It will only take a few minutes, but your views will help us with our ongoing school improvement efforts - https://tr.ee/E3FvNphmS6
I want to commend all Jets for the effort I saw this past week at keeping the cafeteria and campus clean. This shows your respect and value for our beautiful campus.
Thank you for reading.

AP Thomas is a huge Stephen King fan. In fact, she has read all of his novels. “I read It in 7th grade. His writing is so descriptive that it helps you create that visual in your mind. This is what kept me reading him from then on. He develops his characters so that you are invested in them.” And, his writing is really scary! After middle school, she was drawn more to his realistic novels, such as Dolores Claiborne and Misery. If you’ve never read Stephen King, check him out. Thank you, AP Thomas!

Eighth graders Andrea and Emily both bought a copy of I Survived The Shark Attacks of 1916 by Lauren Tarshis from Legacy’s Scholastic Book Fair and read it in one day. Emily shared her thoughts: “I liked how they all doubted Chet (one of the characters) and they didn’t believe him. But at the end, they all realized that he was a good person who was trying to make friends. I have had someone not believe me, even when I was telling the truth. It made me feel like I was untrusted, like Chet.”
Andrea liked the fact that, “Chet became a hero at the end because he saved people, even though they did him dirty. I have had friends treat me bad before, like talk behind my back and then act like nothing happened to my face. I was like Chet because I still was nice to them even when they were not the best to me.”
Thank you, Andrea and Emily for sharing your connections to the book!

Update from Mark Rummel, Athletic Director:
Just wanted to let everyone know that the school year is in full swing and the first athletic season is coming to a close. Our boys soccer team fought hard this year and have shown improvement from last season. I am proud of our boys who have worked hard all season and never quit!
Our next season up is Boys and Girls Volleyball. Try-out information is below.
Remember that all students need a new physical in order to try out for any sport at Legacy. Everything is transitioning to digital as well. This means you will upload your physicals through Aktivate.com on your own account. Along with physicals being digital, so are our tickets for our athletic events at Legacy through GoFan.com. There you can purchase all of your event tickets. No cash will be accepted at the doors or gates for sports. Many of our other schools also are going this route. So please be prepared when traveling to events as well.
Parents, we are always looking for volunteers to help us out whether it be at the ticket tables or at scoring tables. Please feel free to email me at Mark.Rummel@ocps.net if you would like to get involved.
Soon we will be sending out an opportunity to donate to our athletic department through a new fundraising application. This will hopefully aid in new equipment and uniforms for our teams for this year and for future seasons to come.

Mr. Feinberg, 8th Grade ELA, has been using the “FRAMing” technique to make complex information/text accessible for all learning styles. He adapted the FRAMing graphic organizer to meet the standards for 8th grade’s current benchmarks, which is identifying how writers use rhetoric to appeal to their readers. An excerpt of Elie Weasel’s Nobel Peace Prize is the text being used for this standard.

"Rigor outside of the classroom" with Ms. Johnson (Math):

Ms. Johnson’s 8th grade math students analyze, discuss and practice X and Y intercepts…OUTSIDE! How cool is that? Ms. Johnson, we appreciate how you honor your students’ varied learning styles in your instruction.

Legacy Economics Corner
An occasional look at key economic indicators that might impact our Legacy families.
Hispanic Americans contributions to the economy.
As this is the last week of Hispanic Heritage Month '23, we close with a couple of insights as to how Hispanic Americans have recently contributed to the massive U.S. economy.
Hispanic Americans beat most getting back to work after Covid:
Making sense of the chart for our Legacy families: When it comes to getting back to work, Hispanic Americans have bounced back faster than most since the Covid pandemic (the chart shows the percentage change since Feb. 2020). Through August 2023, employment in the Hispanic community was 6.9% above pre-pandemic levels, compared to only 1.4% for the non-Hispanic population.
After tax income by Hispanic households has risen sharply in only 10 years:
Making sense of the chart for our Legacy families: Hispanic household after-tax income has jumped +52% in ten years (2012 to 2022). This means these households are increasingly contributing to U.S. government operations. (The grey vertical line in the chart is the period of the last U.S. economic recession - Covid in the spring of 2020.)
