What’s Happening with Wesley Homes?

There has been significant behind the scenes action on the Wesley Homes project.

To deed the land to The Inn Between, a survey must be completed.

Clint Schahrer contacted 3 companies for quotes. Before making a decision on which company to use, a few more questions need to be answered. We are moving in a direction to make that decision. The survey will take about 10 weeks.

The Wesley Homes team is pursuing funding through grants to pay for the cost of the survey.

Steps have also been taken for moving the Wild Plum Outdoor Learning Center closer to the building.

Jean Malchow has been diligently working on refining the drawing and planning for that. Quotes for materials have been attained.

The committee will be applying to a variety of foundations seeking funding for the Outdoor Learning Center. Wild Plum will be assisting us.

You might be wondering why HOL is burdened with the expenses involved with this project. As owners of the property, we are responsible for any changes made and as such we bear the burden of costs.

The Wesley Homes team continues to make progress toward realization of affordable housing for families.

If you want to know more, contact Rod Edmonds, Jean Malchow, Clint Schahrer, Joan Edmonds or Tricia Grafelman.

This Year's Gratitude Campaign

Was A Great Success

Thank you! Thank you for your commitment to support God’s work through our congregation.

Jesus said: “Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down,

shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap.” (Luke 6:38 NRSV)

I feel this year’s Gratitude Campaign was a great success. You, the members of

the Heart of Longmont, have given generously from your heart to continue the

mission of the church.

As of November 30, 78 pledges were received and was an increase over the

number of pledges in 2021. Of the $352,985 received, $63,630 was for the capital

campaign.

On the capital campaign, 32 pledges were received. Twenty-two pledged for just

one year totaling $21,270. Ten pledged $42,360 to be paid over three years. It is

the goal for the loan to install the HVAC project to be paid in three years and to

have enough in the capital budget to fund future projects. We would like to raise

$150,000 over the next three years to achieve this goal.

We on the Finance Team have faith that our wonderful congregation will support

the ministries and programs for the Heart of Longmont. If you have not made a

pledge for 2023, or if any members would like to commit to the capital campaign

and have not done so, please pray about your gifts from God and consider making

a pledge.

Financial Update

October was a much improved month financially for HOL. Our giving was up from September while our expenses were down slightly. Our overall church finances continue to be slightly better than the 2022 budget, with income at 86% of the annual budget and expenses at 80% of the annual budget (83% of the year is complete). However, it should be noted that the 2022 approved budget was a loss of $70,885; our expectation in setting the budget was that our income would exceed the budget and expenses will be lower so our loss for the year would be less.

As mentioned previously, YTD income and net (deficit) comparisons to 2021 are impacted by the forgiveness in June 2021 of the PPP loan of $37,900. No such benefit is forthcoming in 2022.

Without the PPP loan forgiveness, income for the year is up $24,464 (8.8%) thanks primarily to a couple large contributions in January and a large contribution in August.

Expenses are up $20,405 (6.4%) from 2021. The largest variances to budget continues to be for our facility operations where our building maintenance expenses are at 93% of the annual budget, and gas/electric are at 94.6% of the annual budget.

It's Not Too Late To Give

Of course you know, year end 2022 is upon us, and I feel compelled to remind you it’s not too late…

You still have time to make a contribution to the Heart of Longmont for 2022. As long as your contribution is dated by December 31, it will be included in your 2022 giving statement. You may support Heart of Longmont with a check (mailed or dropped off at the church this week), or by clicking on this link to give online https://secure.myvanco.com/YN6K/home.

If you have questions or are looking for year end guidance, there are two resources on the hospitality desk you might find of value: Thanksgiving Sharing Life’s Gifts and Year End Gifts.

If you are unsure of where you stand in terms of 2022 giving, you may check your giving statement via Breeze, or request a statement (email or "snail mail") from the office and one will be sent to you.

As always, a big thank you to all who have supported the various ministries of Heart of Longmont this year. Our ability to put more of God’s love into the world is made possible with everyone’s support.

Tickets for the Longs Peak Chorus Christmas shows are now available! They will be performing at Heart of Longmont December 16 at 7PM and December 17 at 2PM.

The tickets are free! See church members Keith Watson, Bob Plass, or Dave Waddell for tickets. Tickets can also be ordered online at: LongsPeakChristmasShow.eventbrite.com

You are invited to help decorate the altar with poinsettias for Christmas.

You may donate a poinsettia in memory or in honor of a loved one or friend. Submit your request on a flyer which will accompany the bulletin each Sunday November 27, December 4, 11 and 18.

The flowers will be displayed for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. You may pick up your poinsettia after either of those services. The cost will be $15.00 payable to the church noted for flowers. Please contact Ann Yoder (303 772-8294) or the church office for more information.

Wild Plum Christmas Basket Sign Up

If you signed up for a Wild Plum Christmas Basket, there is now a sheet on the table in the Gallery where you signed up and a basket with information about the families available to buy for. Your name is listed on the sheet with a space to write down the family or families you choose.

The baskets must be back by December 11th and marked with the number of the family they are for.

There are still many Wild Plum families to be adopted for our Christmas Basket event so sign up in the Gallery to help make someone's holiday a little brighter!

A Balance of Ministry and Mission

with the Ongoing Business

of Managing Church

Over the past year, Church Council has been studying and discussing a new governance structure for the Heart of Longmont. After many meetings, presentations, and much discernment, Church Council unanimously approved a proposal to implement a new Simplified, Accountable Structure (“SAS”) effective January 1, 2023. This proposal will be on the agenda for the December 12 Annual Church Conference. The purpose of the change is to ensure a balance of leadership and volunteerism between the day to day needs of managing "church" and the mission and ministry activities that underlie our mission. A copy of the Church Council Report and Recommendations (October 26, 2022) is available in the office. In addition, members of Church Council will be available after the church service on December 4 to answer any questions about the new structure…so, mark your calendars for that date and time.

Prison Ministry

Note pads, cards and calendars start appearing in the mail this time of year. Instead of tossing them into the recycle barrel, deposit them in the air lock cupboard labeled “prison ministry”.

One person’s trash becomes another person’s treasure.

Volunteer to Help at Santa's Workshop!

It's not too early to start planning our Christmas activities. Please consider volunteering for this fun new event!

Santa's Workshop will allow children who have no means to give a gift to their beloved adult a way to do so. We will be inviting our congregation to donate either money that we will give to the children to use to purchase the gifts or personal items from your home that you believe they would enjoy giving to their loved ones. Tie’s, jewelry, and games are generally items the kids love to gift. Look through your homes and see what it is that you don’t use anymore, that would make a nice gift.

If you prefer a more ‘hands on’ approach to volunteering for this event you can consider being a 'personal shopper' that will guide the young shopper in picking out a special gift for their parent or siblings. Or you can help at the card station, the wrapping station, serving hot chocolate or helping with Santa. Please sign up via this Signup Genius link: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/20F044CADAB2CA1FF2-santas

If you have any questions, please contact Tricia Grafelman at tricia@heartoflongmont.org

Christmas Music Extravaganza - Join us Sunday morning on December 11 for a special worship service: our Christmas Music Extravaganza! The sanctuary will be flooded with music of the season: carols, hymns, and other Christmas standards.

Santa's Workshop - On Sunday December 11 from 2PM to 5PM, Santa's workshop will be at Heart of Longmont! Kids can find gifts for parents, siblings, and other loved ones, with the help of a personal shopper. There will be a card table and gift wrapping table as well as hot cocoa. And, of course, Santa will be there! This event is open to the public and free of charge. Limited slots are available, so please sign up to attend! (No drop-offs, please. Parents must wait on the premises for the child.)

Annual Church Conference - Our All church conference will be on Zoom on Monday December 12th at 6pm. The Zoom link will be coming soon!

Christmas Eve Services - We invite everyone, no matter who you are, to join us in person or online for Christmas Eve services. We will be hosting two services December 24. At 4:30PM there will be a family service. At 7:00PM will be our Candlelight service. We hope to see you there.

Brown Bag Lunch Study - Starting Tuesday, Jan. 17th, at 12:00 pm Pastor Claire would like to invite you to "pack you lunch and unpack the prior sermon" with her. The study lasts for 4 weeks. We will meet in the Parlor.

Enneagram Study - Are you curious about your personality type? The Enneagram Personality test is a system of personality typing that describes patterns in how people interpret the world and manage their emotions. The Enneagram describes nine personality types and maps each of these types on a nine-pointed diagram which helps to illustrate how the types relate to one another.

Join us for a 4 week study starting Tuesday evening, January 31st at 6:30 via zoom. More information to follow as the date gets closer. If you are interested, let Tricia know. Cost is $12 to take the Enneagram test. Mark your calendars now!

December's compassion offering supports two wonderful causes this year. Donations will be split between Habitat for Humanity and Wesley Homes.

Habitat for Humanity brings people together to build homes, communities, and hope. 1 in 7 Colorado families pays more than 50% of their income on housing. Habitat is dedicated to providing decent, affordable housing for low-income families in the community.

Heart of Longmont entered into a partnership with the nonprofit The Inn Between in July 2022 on the Wesley Homes project. The Inn Between of Longmont provides affordable housing rental to individuals and families who are below 40% of the median income level for Boulder County. Wesley Homes will involve construction of approximately 12 2-story units for families to rent at the North end of the HOL parking lot. The housing will be long term rental but also serve as a stepping stone to home ownership as families become more financially stable. You can read more about Wesley Homes on our website.

If you wish to donate to this month's compassion offering, you can do so online by clicking here and navigating to the Monthly Compassion Offering tile. Or, you may send a check to the church office with "Compassion Offering" on the memo line.

With cooler weather and increased activity, we can certainly feel that the winter holidays will soon be upon us! Many of you are already reaching out to see how you can help - thank you!

See below for the items we can use for our Community Cafe and Community Market programs, as we see more families needing food and as we prepare for extra holiday provisions.

Our Mission:

Putting More of God's Love Into The World

Helping all persons find deeper meaning and God’s purpose for their lives as committed Christ-followers.

Serving as the Heart of Longmont means:

We will welcome all persons, without reservation or judgment,

just as Jesus Christ would do.

We will work tirelessly by entering into intentional acts of compassion and social justice to make our community a place where God’s love is known by all, where poverty and deprivation are unknown by any, and where respect for the worth and dignity of each person is the norm.

We will respect and honor other religious traditions

while choosing Christ as our way of knowing God best.

We will emphasize life-long learning so that we may

engage our world from a dynamic and creative perspective.

We will work to protect God’s creation.

We will practice stewardship of all aspects of our lives,

including time, talent, financial resources, and spiritual gifts.
