This Sunday we join churches and communities across the nation in honoring the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who was born ninety years ago, on January 15, 1929, in Atlanta. In worship we will read again the words Dr. King wrote from the Birmingham Jail in April 1963, excerpted from his letter that was first printed in the Christian Century.

We also look forward to welcoming students of the Chicago Lights Dance Academy, who will offer a liturgical dance interpreting the morning’s anthem, “We Shall Overcome,” during the 9:30 and 11:00 services.

TwentiesThirties are getting together for brunch this Sunday, January 20 following 11:00 a.m. worship. Those young adults interested in this time of fellowship over a shared meal are invited to meet at the TwentiesThirties Coffee Hour table at 12:10 p.m. The group, joined by Lucy Forster-Smith, will walk to a nearby restaurant for this opportunity to connect in community.

Women at Fourth will welcome Joe Morrow, Fourth Church’s Minister for Evangelism, to their monthly gathering this Thursday, January 24. Joe will share stories from his faith and ministerial journey as well as lead a discussion of how emerging generations in the United States are searching for God, purpose, and connection, both inside and beyond the boundaries of the church. The 5:30 p.m. time of refreshments will be followed by the 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. program in the Bumpus Room.

On this Martin Luther King Jr. weekend, the Racial Equity Council invites you to a screening of The Long Shadow, a documentary about the origins and legacy of slavery. It will be shown at St. James Cathedral (Huron and Wabash) this Sunday, January 20 at 3:30 p.m. For those unable to see it then, the film will be reshown at LaSalle Street Church (1136 N. LaSalle) on Sunday, February 17 at 2:00 p.m.

A new Men’s Faith Discussion group begins on Friday, February 15 at 7:00 a.m. Meeting weekly through May 17, the group will combine autobiography and active listening to Jesus’ life and teachings. Using the Gospel of Matthew, participants will also learn to listen to the Gospel being read in a way that is personal and applicable to daily life. (No knowledge of the Bible or of theology is required.) For more information or to register (required), contact Anne Ellis.

This Sunday our weekly Jazz at Four Communion service continues the eight-week sermon series: “Who Is Jesus?”

Last week Joe Morrow preached on “ Jesus the Beloved.” This week Shannon Kershner will lead our reflection on “Jesus the Prophet.”

Between now and Ash Wednesday we will also reflect on

“Jesus the Teacher” (January 27)
“Jesus the Outsider” (February 3)
“Jesus the Preacher” (February 10)
“Jesus the Healer” (February 17)
“Jesus the Just” (February 24)
“Jesus the Resurrected” (March 3)

Come join us on Sundays at 4:00 p.m. in Buchanan Chapel as we retell stories from scripture of people who experience God and are changed and as we together discover the person and power of Jesus Christ.

Tickets are now available for the 2019 Gala of Hope, the annual benefit in support of Chicago Lights—the community outreach arm of Fourth Church—and the Replogle Center for Counseling and Well-Being.

This year’s event will be held on Friday, March 1 at 5:30 p.m. at the Radisson Blu Aqua (221 N. Columbus).

The festive evening includes a three-course seated dinner, dancing to live music provided by the Ken Arlen Evolution Orchestra, a mystery wine sale, a drawing, and silent and live auctions featuring unique experiences, getaways, entertainment, and more.
