R Pins - Tell People Who you R!
Today marks the return to in-person orientation for new members at your SAR, after a two-year pause due to Covid restrictions.

Every new member in the on-boarding session today will be presented with a REALTOR® pin (pictured).

According to association records, more than 600 brokers joined us during the pandemic shutdown and did not receive in-person orientation. These members may not have received their R-pin.

If this includes you, please know you are very welcome to stop in at your SAR at your earliest convenience and receive your R-pin so you can tell your clients and friends who you R!

You've earned this!
Spokane: State of the City
Spokane Mayor Nadine Woodward delivered her 2022 State of the City address - the first she has been able to deliver in person due to the recent pandemic - before an audience of about 500 people in downtown Spokane, this week.

Mayor Woodward announced Catholic Charities of Eastern Washington plans to relocate the House of Charity shelter to a new location outside of downtown Spokane.

The mayor also emphasized Housing supply as one of her six key strategic initiatives.
Shaping Spokane Housing
Residential Development Code Initiatives
The City of Spokane is considering code amendments that will be foundational to increasing housing supply, variety, and affordability.

The current conversation at City Hall addresses development of attached houses (townhouses), duplexes, accessory dwellings, smaller multifamily projects, increasing the number of homes allowed per acre of land, and permitting for a wider variety of housing types generally.

What do you think?
The City of Spokane
 wants your feedback!
City has identified seven code amendments that could be included in the 2022 Plan Commission work program and would be adopted as changes to the Spokane Municipal Code as early as spring 2022.

You can review a description of each proposal on the project webpage, which will be updated as the draft revisions evolve.

Spokane Association of REALTORS®
Announces Association Executive Retirement and Successor Search
The Spokane Association of REALTORS® (SAR) offers great respect and appreciation to its Association Executive, Rob Higgins, as he retires as the association executive after 37-years. Rob has been a calm, focused leader through revolutionary changes in technology and processes throughout the industry – not to mention a national recession and global pandemic.

Rob will continue as Association Executive into the fall.

“The first thing we need to say to Rob is ‘thank you,’” says 2022 SAR President Eric Etzel. “So many days he got here early, stayed late, and literally shoveled ice berms out in the parking lot so members and staff could access our building. I want Rob to know we saw his dedication, we saw his kindness, and we appreciate him more than words can express. The leadership team wishes Rob a healthy and happy retirement.”

Racial Covenants in Home Titles
to Remain in Public Record
County auditors cannot remove racial covenants on a home’s title and deed from the public record, the state Supreme Court ruled Thursday. In a case that started in Spokane County, the court affirmed a lower court ruling in favor of the county, saying that racial covenants, language in home titles that made it illegal for people of color to live there, should remain in the public record.

“We must ensure that future generations have access to these documents because, although the covenants are morally repugnant, they are part of a documented history of disenfranchisement of a people,” Justice G. Helen Whitener wrote in the unanimous opinion. ”It is our history.”

2022 SAR President Eric Etzel met with Spokane County Auditor Vicky Dalton at the association office, this week, and talked with her about this.
