Dramatic Reading of a 1948 Broadcast

Join us this Monday evening in hearing a dramatic reading of Richard Durham's Railway to Freedom, a radio play originally broadcast in July 1948.

A beautiful story about Harriet Tubman and her journey through and for the Underground Railroad, Railway to Freedom first appeared on Richard Durham's Destination Freedom radio program--which aired on Chicago's WMAQ from June 27, 1948, until its cancellation in August of 1950. Unlike anything else being broadcast at the time, Destination Freedom treated audiences, who tuned in every Sunday morning, to dramatized stories featuring prominent African Americans.

As part of this Black History Month event Monday evening there will also be conversation with the actors presenting the reading and a time of refreshments will follow the performance.

threeA Labyrinth Walk to Begin Lent
A Time and Space Apart
Prior to our evening service on Ash Wednesday, we will be hosting an Ash Wednesday labyrinth walk as a way to center ourselves before worship and to pause for prayerful meditation as we enter the Lenten season.

Labyrinth hosts will be on hand in Buchanan Chapel between 6:00 and 7:15 p.m. to assist those who may have questions about walking the labyrinth. (Walking the labyrinth takes about twenty minutes). They will also be able to provide some suggestions for a prayer or other ways in which you might use this time to begin your Lenten reflections.

This labyrinth walk provides an opportunity to be an individual while in community, to be present, and to listen to God's voice in your life. We look forward to welcoming you to this sacred space!

devotionsReflections for Your Lenten Journey
Daily Devotions by Members and Staff
The season of Lent calls Christians to embrace the faith journey by reflecting upon and deepening their relationship with God.

As a resource for such Lenten reflections, we will be offering daily devotions written specifically for Lent by Fourth Church members and staff. The scripture texts are drawn from the weekly " Path of Discipleship" Lenten series.

Lenten devotions are available in a variety of ways beginning on Ash Wednesday:
We look forward to your joining us on this Lenten journey--and welcome you to invite friends and family to share in these reflections as well.

The day promises to be a healing, prayerful, and active journey into our collective pasts and communal present.

A Friday Night Fellowship Gathering
Charles M. Charnley, a local and national Presbyterian church leader more than 100 years ago, embezzled around $100,000 from Fourth Presbyterian Church and the national Presbyterian College Fund in 1897--and then vanished with his wife after slipping custody of a Pinkerton staff person set to watch him.

On Friday evening, March 3, Jack Perry Brown, former director of Ryerson & Burnham Libraries at the Art Institute, will reconstruct for us Charnley's colorful later life on the lam and his activities over three decades.

Join us for this 6:00 p.m. dinner-and-program fellowship gathering hosted by Cornerstones, a fellowship group of those fifty and over.
