Project enters final weeks until spring

This week, the Central Avenue North Water Improvements project contractor completed the final connection to the new water main.

The remaining work for this season, anticipated to be completed over the next couple of weeks, includes repairing two deficient sewer pipes identified during the project and removing old fire hydrants and gate boxes. A complete paving overlay for Central Avenue is planned for the spring.

Monday, Dec. 27, through Wednesday, Dec. 29:

  • The contractor will replace sewer services at 792 and 829 Central Ave.

  • When the contractor works at 792 Central Ave., southbound Central Avenue traffic will be detoured around the work site via Lowell Avenue, Mount Vernon Street and Ash Street. Northbound traffic will proceed through the work area.

  • When the contractor works at 829 Central Ave., traffic will be reduced to one lane through the project area, alternated by flaggers.

Thursday, Dec. 30:

  • The contractor will pave the week's work areas.

  • No work is scheduled for New Year's Eve, Friday, Dec. 31. Work will resume Monday, Jan. 3.

Project overview
The Central Avenue North Water Improvements Project replaces two sections of water mains. One is a 133-year-old, 14-inch water main from Lowell Avenue to Abbey Sawyer Memorial Drive, a critical piece of Dover's water system infrastructure. The other is an undersized six-inch water main from Glenwood Avenue to Lowell Avenue installed in 1927. The contractor has replaced both mains with 16-inch ductile iron pipes expected to last the next 100-150 years. The project will significantly improve reliability and fire flow capacity in the area as well as create a better interconnection between the City of Dover's two water pressure zones.

After a competitive bid process, the City Council awarded the construction contract to N. Granese & Sons, Inc. of Salem, Massachusetts, the same contractor as the Washington and Main Water Improvements Project.

Residents and businesses in the construction area with questions or concerns should contact Deputy Community Services Director Bill Boulanger at b.boulanger@dover.nh.gov or 516-6450. Boulanger is the project manager.
