A TORAH MESSAGE FROM THE RABBI
Lessons From The Liturgy.

I have spent much of the last 10 years (Yes, it’s been 10 years), using my Shabbat Message to regale you with my thoughts about the Torah portion of the week. I am going to start to veer from this path and spend some time writing about our liturgy which is rich conceptually, functionally, and in content.

Traditionally, we daven (pray) 3 times a day, Morning(Shacharit), afternoon(Mincha), and night(Maariv). The services are similar in structure, but each has its own nuances. I am going to begin by going through the morning service. I have no idea how long this will take, but each week I will provide some lesson or insight. Here goes.

With this as background, permit me to provide some basic information about the liturgy. The morning service is broken into several component parts. The first part is called Birkhot Hashachar (literally the morning blessings). These are preliminary prayers that we say. Essentially they are prayers that we say to prepare us to pray.

Our tradition tells us that we are born body and soul. The body is our physical self, the soul is most easily defined as our spiritual self, or maybe as the piece of God that is within each of us. Tradition further tells us that God literally gives us our souls at birth.

It is not surprising that two of the preliminary prayers focus on the body and the soul.

The prayer for the gift of our body specifically thanks God for creating a body with openings and closings, organs, and an intricate design. It recognizes that if one of these systems does not work properly, then the body will not function well. Thus, every morning we acknowledge the wonder that is our body. Click here to reads this prayer in the Hebrew or English:

Does anything surprise you about this prayer? How does it make you feel?

The very next prayer (Elohai Neshama) offers thanks for the gift of the soul. There is a recognition that the soul is eternal and on loan to the body. Thus, every morning we are acknowledging that we each have an intimate connection to God. Click here to read this pray in Hebrew or English:
Does anything surprise you about this prayer? How does it make you feel?

If we pray with our body and soul, we are praying completely. At all times there is the tangible and the intangible and we need to always be mindful of this. It is not easy to do this every day, multiple times a day. The Rabbis understood this and determined that we need to be reminded every morning.

Wholly Holistic Holiness; it’s the only way to pray.

Shabbat Shalom – Rabbi Michael S. Jay

Vayetzei (“He Went Out”) opens as Jacob dreams about angels going up and down a ladder, and then continues on his journey toward the home of his uncle Laban. During years of indentured servitude, Jacob marries Laban’s daughters Leah and Rachel, bearing children with them and with their maidservants, Bilhah and Zilpah.

WAX TRIP TO WOODBINE
A most intriguing morning was spent at the Sam Azeez Museum of Woodbine Heritage in Woodbine NJ. The story of this once Jewish-only community just 50 miles south west of Manahawkin was facinating. Our guide and the Museum Director, Joan Stark, joyfully unfolded the history of the community. She shared many anecdotes about past residents and decendents of this "harmonious" town. Thank you to Suzie Geier for putting together our WAX day trip.

Florence Adler Swims Forever
by Rachel Beanland

Atlantic City, 1934. Every summer, Esther and Joseph Adler rent their house out to vacationers escaping to “America’s Playground” and move into the small apartment above their bakery. Despite the cramped quarters, this is the apartment where they raised their two daughters, Fannie and Florence, and it always feels like home. After Joseph insists they take in a mysterious young woman whom he recently helped emigrate from Nazi Germany, the apartment is bursting at the seams. Esther only wants to keep her daughters close and safe but some matters are beyond her control. When tragedy strikes, Esther makes the shocking decision to hide the truth—and pulls the family into an elaborate web of secret-keeping and lies, bringing long-buried tensions to the surface that reveal how quickly the act of protecting those we love can turn into betrayal.
