Making a Difference for Those in Need
Easiest Routes to Church This Sunday
Thank You for Snacks and PDA Support!
Thank you to all who supported two special September initiatives to make a difference in the lives of our neighbors in the city and around the world.

Your response to our disaster relief offering resulted in gifts totaling $32,606.25, which Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) will use to respond to the emergency and ongoing needs of those affected by recent natural disasters .

Additionally, our September goal of collecting 10,000 snacks by October 1 was exceeded by more than 3,000, as your contributions of individually packaged snacks surpassed the 13,000 mark!

Each month Fourth Church Meals Ministry and the Chicago Lights Elam Davies Social Service Center distribute 5,000 snack items, meaning September's contributions will sustain these efforts into the beginning of November.

So on behalf of PDA, our World Mission and Social Justice Committee, Fourth Church Meals Ministry, the Chicago Lights Elam Davies Social Service Center, and our guests, thank you!
And All the Best to Our Marathon Team!
The Chicago Marathon is taking place this Sunday, affecting the accessibility of roads downtown and near Fourth Church during morning services. Directions on the easiest routes to use to get to Fourth Church that morning can be found online. We look forward to worshiping together this Sunday!

We also send wishes for a great race to all those who will be running the marathon, especially the Chicago Lights Marathon Team, including Shannon Kershner and more than thirty others. We are grateful to them and to those who have supported their efforts, helping them raise more than $60,000 for the work of our nonprofit social service organization. Thank you!

braunIntro to Systemic Racism
A One-Day Workshop on October 21
Last month more than forty members and staff participated in the thought-provoking and challenging workshop "Introduction to Systemic Racism."

Several more individuals have indicated an interest in joining this conversation as well, and so on Saturday, October 21 we will be offering the workshop again. This training will provide an opportunity for us to develop common language, awareness, and framework to be able to have productive conversations about race, racism, and systemic racism within and beyond our church.

To take part in the next "Introduction to Systemic Racism" workshop--which will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the church--RSVP to Anne Ellis by Friday, October 13. (The workshop fee is $25.)

Come join us as we work to live into our commitment and vision of Fourth Church being a fully inclusive, anti-racist congregation.

meeting"Back to the Future" on Sundays
The Tradition of Apocalyptic Literature
The New Testament book known as "The Revelation of John" is part of an apocalyptic tradition that predates the Gospel according to John by more than half a millennium.

Using the apocalyptic literature in the Old Testament as a starting point for understanding the primary concerns of this genre and its leading features and motifs, this survey will conclude with a focus on the Apocalypse of John.

One of the leading themes in apocalyptic literature was expressed in Greek centuries before the New Testament: "the latter things are like the former." In other words, apocalyptic literature envisions the end to be like the beginning. In a way, you could say that The Apocalypse of John takes us "back to the future"!
