No Blues at the Beach

I hope you enjoyed the beautiful weekend weather. Harriet and I snuck away to the beach and soaked up every beautiful moment (though my laptop seemed to be quite busy!). I finished preparations for Monday’s Faculty Sector meeting and hope you can attend. I also worked on a new grant application and reviewed an MS thesis paper. I was busy, but had time to take some lovely walks. We did not eat out, but we did bring in takeout.

News & Announcements
Georgetown Lombardi Faculty Meeting is Today

Monday, May 2
12:00 - 1:00 p.m.

This meeting will be used in part to discuss the new Georgetown Lombardi programs. Join the meeting via Zoom.
Biological Pathways Found That Drive Genomic Changes and Bone Metastasis in Ewing Sarcoma, a Rare Childhood Cancer

In studies using mice grafted with human Ewing sarcoma tissue, researchers led by Georgetown Lombardi METRO Program member Joanna Kitlinska, PhD, have identified a biological pathway that is activated when tissue is starved of oxygen due to rapid growth of a tumor, thereby allowing cancer cells to make genetic changes so they can metastasize to the bone and thrive even when exposed to chemotherapy. The finding appeared April 28 in Nature Communications. Read more about this research.
Adolescent and Young Adult Cancer Survivors Benefit From MedStar Georgetown Program

Following successful treatment for Ewing sarcoma diagnosed at age 20, Eileen Fauteux was offered the opportunity to participate in the MedStar Georgetown University Hospital Pediatric, Adolescent, and Young Adult (PAYA) Survivorship Program. The PAYA Hematology/Oncology team includes Georgetown Lombardi METRO Program member Jeffrey A. Toretsky, MD, chief of MedStar Georgetown’s Division of Pediatric, Adolescent, and Young Adult Hematology/Oncology, and Cancer Prevention and Control Program member Tara K. Suntum, MD, also a MedStar Georgetown pediatric hematologist and oncologist. Read more about the PAYA Survivorship Program and watch a video about Eileen’s story. Georgetown Lombardi Members: Complete the Shared Resource User Survey
This year’s Shared Resource User Survey is now open to Georgetown Lombardi members. This is an essential part of the planning and decision-making process for Shared Resource services, particularly as it relates to the needs of members across our research partner institutions, and all members are expected to respond. The survey should take about 10 minutes to complete, and has been updated this year to be more user-friendly. Please plan to complete the survey as soon as possible, but no later than May 15. Access the survey here. Results will be circulated to members over the summer. Please address questions to Sharon Levy (sgl5@georgetown.edu) or David Goerlitz (dsg3@georgetown.edu).
Get Back in the Saddle: Join a BellRinger Training Ride
Good news, training rides are here! BellRinger is a little less than six months away, and it’s time to get back in the saddle. Join BellRinger for regular training rides led by expert leaders. BellRinger isn’t a race, and neither are these training rides. The rides will be casual and focus on safe, social group rides. Check out the full list of training rides online here. Everyone is welcome!
