We illuminate our community with God’s grace as we lovingly accept, listen to, and serve all in the Spirit of Jesus.

WHAT'S LENT? . . . HOW TO OBSERVE IT

How John Wesley Practiced Lent

This week we began the 40-day Lenten season with Ash Wednesday - it ends on Holy Saturday, the day before Easter. The word Lent comes from the Anglo Saxon lencten, meaning spring. Lent is traditionally a time for repentance, self-reflection, and recalibrating ourselves spiritually.

I Wish I Could Do Something: The Paradox of Powerlessness

Several years ago, a group in our Annual Conference was engaged in outreach and listening, particularly among the African American community, to understand why there was a lack of widespread support for LGBTQ+ inclusion in the UMC. I was invited to host a listening session at a gathering of Black clergy and laity.

Playing Chess: The Last Supper, John 13: 1-30

Defining Moments: At the Last Supper, Jesus sets the stage for His ultimate sacrifice, offering Himself as the new covenant. He washes His disciples' feet, demonstrating that true power lies in humble service. This deliberate moment shows Jesus’ deliberate path toward the cross, fully aware and fully in control.

Good News Statement: Jesus washes feet in humble service so that we may understand true leadership and love.

UMCG IN THE COMMUNITY

We were proud to show our support at the CASA gala last weekend--

the group who attended to represent UMCG had a great time!

A group from UMCG (along with AFS) volunteered at the Northern Illinois Food Bank. Our assignment was to pack “backpacks” so kids in the community could have meal security over the weekends. We set up an assembly line—one person opened bags, another placed an item in, another packed the boxes. In just three hours, we packed 13,870 pounds of food, providing 11,558 meals!

NEWS FROM THE UMC COMMUNITY

Baker UMC's March 16th performance at 3pm of Mozart's Requiem will be given to raise money for a much-needed boiler for our church. You may wonder, why Mozart? Besides the fact that the work is a masterpiece of Sacred music performed thousands of times since its creation, it also carries a great deal of mystery as to its origins and completion.
