Briefing: Black Health Equity
When: Thursday, October 5, 2023 from 12:00pm-1:30pm
Where: Zoom
| |
Health is a key value for Black Americans, who are among the groups most likely to say they always make their health a priority. But pervasive barriers in the health care system prevent them from achieving the health they actively seek. Health Disparities by Race and Ethnicity in California: Pattern of Inequity found that while the average Californian lives to be 81, the average Black Californian lives only to age 75. And Black Californians experience the highest death rates from breast, cervical, colorectal, lung, and prostate cancer, despite having higher health insurance coverage rates than the state average.
Join CHCF on October 5 for a briefing that will examine the health care challenges so many Black Californians face despite their pursuit of good health, as well as highlight strategies for advancing Black health equity.

Spanish-Speaking Callers Face Discrimination During Appointment Scheduling
A recent secret-shopper study commissioned by the Community Healthcare Foundation found that Spanish-speaking callers faced more challenges obtaining appointment information for behavioral health services in California safety-net clinics. Nearly 1 out of every 5 Spanish calls ended with a scheduler either hanging up or stating that no Spanish-speaking assistants were available. Getting appointment information is key because it is a necessary step in scheduling an appointment.
The study made several recommendations to reduce inequities in access, including prioritizing hiring bilingual staff in positions such as receptionists and schedulers, promoting high-quality medical language courses, and simplifying the workflows to bring interpreters into scheduling discussions.

Roadmap for Resilience: Intergenerational Transmission of Adversity
The Roadmap for Resilience is the California Surgeon General's Report on Adverse Childhood Experiences, Toxic Stress, and Health.
Summary of main points from their report on the transmission of adversity:
-
Intergenerational Transmission: ACEs and toxic stress can alter the biology and behavior of people in ways that affect the birth and development of their children.
-
Generational Risk: Children born to parents with high ACE scores are more likely to experience a variety of neuropsychiatric, behavioral, and physical health problems.
-
Prenatal Impacts: The effects of toxic stress due to ACEs may impact our ability to conceive, and may increase risk of miscarriage, preterm birth, and low birth weight.
-
Adversity and Resilience Can Be Passed on Through Epigenetics: The intergenerational transmission of ACEs isn’t fully determined in childhood. The same pathways that pass on the negative effects of toxic stress can also pass on positive resiliency factors when we as adults with ACEs adopt long-term practices to heal ourselves and are supported by communities and systems with resources that address our needs.
