Readers for Union Hill Elementary

Wanted: Readers for 2nd graders at Union Hill Elementary. We have 4 willing volunteers at the present time, but there are 7 (SEVEN) 2nd grade classrooms. It would be wonderful to have a 3 more volunteers. That way we could have coverage in each of the classrooms.  All it takes is watching Zoom training, passing a background check for RRISD, and then reading to 2 student for 15 minutes a week from the end of October until the beginning of May. Contact Liz Maybaum as soon as possible if you areinterested, lizmaybaum@twc.com.

Check Your (Physical) Mailbox

Very soon you will be receiving an important packet. It is an opportunity for you to consider how you will serve The Lord and RRCC in 2022. A survey will help you decide how you may “Worship, Serve, and Grow.” Hopefully you will find a balance among these strategies. Also included is a covenant card to respond to the Financial Secretary for your financial commitment for 2022. This is a great help in the 2022 budget preparation. An return envelope is enclosed for return by Wednesday, October 6. Keep checking your mail!

2021 RECONCILIATION OFFERING

...to be given on Sundays, September 26 and October 3, 2021

The prophet Isaiah reminds us that God’s salvation is for ALL of us: “This is what the LORD says: Maintain justice and do what is right, for my salvation is close at hand and my righteousness will soon be revealed.” (Isaiah 56:1)

Reconciliation Ministry is the church-wide mission fund that leads the pro-reconciliation/anti-racism work of the Church, providing education and resources that promote inclusive worship and relationship-building. As Rev. Walker told us recently, the Reconciliation Ministry also funds grants that connect congregations to community needs, such as the Good Samaritan Ministry in the Rio Grande Valley.

Reconciliation is one of the six Special Day Offerings each year that give us the opportunity to support our Disciples Mission Fund. Your donations to this Ministry strengthen the work and witness of Round Rock Christian Church to be the vicarious presence of Christ where we worship, serve, and grow.

Along with your regular offerings to RRCC, you may give online at www.rrdisciples.org (designated for Reconciliation), or by check mailed to Round Rock Christian Church, 22 Chalice Way, Round Rock TX 78665. Thank you in advance for your generous giving on Sunday, September 26 and Sunday, October 3 to Reconciliation Ministry!

Report from the Re-Opening Task Force

A. The RRCC Reopening Task Force held its 15th meeting August 3, 2021 to discuss current Covid levels and to determine whether the current "Gathering Guidelines" for use of the church facility need to be modified. There was consensus that with Covid cases increasing and Austin-Travis County having moved into "Stage 5" guidelines, we need to conduct weekly communications to stay abreast of current changes and determine whether current practices need to be revised. Memo for the week of 8/8/21:

B. Government data/recommendations:

       i. Local data 8/9: The 7 day hospitalization average for Austin-Travis County is 83 and for 8/9 is 74. The 7 day confirmed cases average is 383 and as of 8/9 is 445. The percentage testing positive is 14.5%

ii. CDC data: Masking is encouraged for all activities for both vaccinated and un-vaccinated

iii. RRCC "Gathering Guidelines": The task Force voted to modify current "Gathering Guidelines" to be in sync with changes made last week by the local health authorities. This should be in place as of the August Guiding Board meeting. The Task Force also had consensus to continue to provide "in person" worship, with all wearing masks.

C. The following remains in place until the Task Force and/or Guiding Board announces otherwise:

       i.  Sunday morning Worship Service (wearing masks)

ii. Use of the building by sister congregations (wearing masks)

iv. Use of the building by groups renting facilities  (wearing masks)

D. Initial plans to open the building for Sunday School Classes effective August 22 are being postponed for the time being, as are any small group meetings. Decisions regarding church fellowship lunches and other gatherings in the building will be made on a week-to-week basis and communicated in the weekly church newsletter.

Members of the Task Force/Guiding Board and Ministries Council are encouraged to share suggestions and ideas to assist in improving the combined "zoom" and "in-person" worship experience as well as changes needed to meet the needs of the changing environment. Please communicate your individual ideas to any of these members, to help in providing the best possible worship experience:

Reopening Task Force:

Perry Mouser, Chair

Mildred Adair, Linda Glover, Jennifer Kienzle, Pam Knight, Amy Osteen, Tara Pollock, Randy Preston, Amy Tucker, Gary Tucker, Dan Knight (ex-officio), and Mitch Maxted (ex-officio)

Elders Prayer/Closing Message

“I will say of the LORD, ‘He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.'” – Psalm 91:2

There are times when I really have to wonder about all of us in the human race. We’ll do some of scariest and most idiotic things without giving it a second thought; while other times, we’re scared to death of something that just might be the best thing we’ve ever experienced.

For example, think about how many people we blindly trust with our lives ever day: pharmacists to fill the right pills on a prescription that we can’t read, pilots we don’t know to fly us to the right destination, and even engineers and road construction crews to build sound bridges that carry the weight of hundreds of cars stuck in traffic.

Yet, so many people have trouble trusting in God.

The common argument is, “Well, I can’t see Him, so how do I know that He’s there?” But do we see the engineers who designed the bridge? Do we know the pilots? Not usually. And yet God, our Creator who loves us more than anyone, who even sacrificed His Son for us to have forgiveness of sin and eternal life, in HIM we find it difficult to trust.

It’s amazing. It doesn’t make sense to trust imperfect men and not to trust a perfect God. So, for the Christian who’s struggling with their faith, I challenge you to look back on your life. Throughout all the ups and downs — where was God? Where did He show up when others let you down? How did He provide when the situation appeared bleak? How did He comfort the deepest of pain?

Don’t walk away from God simply because “you can’t see Him.” God shows up in more ways than we think. All we have to do is look.
