Looking Ahead

Next Sunday, October 7, is World Communion Sunday, a day when worshipers around the world gather for the Lord’s Supper. We will celebrate Communion at all four worship services that day. We will also welcome Brian Ellison, Executive Director of the Covenant Network, as our guest preacher for the 9:30 and 11:00 services.

Take a moment for quiet meditation at the end of this week: join us on Friday for our monthly fourth Friday Taizé service, which provides an opportunity to gather in contemplative, prayerful setting.

Candles; easy-to-learn songs from various countries, traditions, and languages; and a period of silence all contribute to a time to reflect and open oneself to God.

The service will be preceded by opportunity to walk the labyrinth in Anderson Hall between 6:00 and 7:30 p.m.

We are still in need of single-serving snack items --granola bars, chips, pretzels, fruit snacks, and fruit cups--to meet our goal of collecting 5,000 items by this coming Monday, October 1.

Donations can be dropped off at--or shipped to--the church reception desk ("Attn: Meals Ministry").

Get your pets ready for an outing to the Michigan Avenue courtyard next Saturday, October 6.

We’ll be gathering that day at 10:00 a.m. for a Blessing of the Animals service of song and story, giving thanks to God for the creatures that bless our lives. All pets are welcome! (Please have them on leash or in a carrier.)

If you’d rather not bring your pets, please bring photographs of them and join us as we celebrate the wonders of God’s creation and our relationships with its creatures, great and small!

Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About the Bible

Sundays, October 21, November 18, December 16, and January 20
at 9:30 a.m.
Join Associate Pastors (and Bible enthusiasts) Rocky Supinger and Matt Helms for a monthly class that mixes biblical storytelling, historical context, literary analysis, and small group discussion to help bring the biblical text to life and wrestle with what it means for us today.

We continue to collect interest profiles as part of our effort to build community at Fourth Church. Those profiles can be filled in during Sunday Coffee Hour or completed at home by downloading a form here.

An Interfaith Immigrant Justice Vigil, cohosted by our World Mission and Social Justice Committee, will take place on Tuesday, October 2 between 5:15 and 7:30 p.m. in the Michigan Avenue courtyard. It will combine prayer, songs, speakers, and art images as an expression of concerns and hopes for justice for those who are immigrants

A Peace and Global Witness Offering, which supports efforts toward peacemaking in our denomination as well as local efforts to address violence in Chicago through CureViolence, will be received next Sunday, October 7, which is World Communion Sunday.

This past Sunday we launched the 2019 Annual Appeal for Fourth Presbyterian Church and Chicago Lights. Materials have been mailed to member homes, and early commitments are being received.

Each year our Annual Appeal gives us opportunity to celebrate the particular ways in which this faith community is committed to actively participating in God s re-creating and reconciling work in this world. It is an invitation to each one of us to join in that work through our financial support.

In the days ahead, please prayerfully consider the investment you will make in your Fourth Church family and its work in 2019 and make a pledge by Sunday, October 28 : Commitment Sunday.

Cornerstones will host a dinner program on “The New Old Post Office: Awakening the Sleeping Giant” next Friday, October 5.

The Old Post Office has straddled the Eisenhower Expressway for so long we forget what a marvel it really is--and was. In his presentation, Les Ventsch--a Design Director at the architecture firm Gensler and a member of Fourth Church and the Morning Choir--will review the history of the building in the city, the original design, and ho w the building i s being repositioned to new office functions for its next chapter as an iconic Chicago structure.
