Today's update includes:

New health restrictions come into effect for the Fraser East region on Wednesday in recognition of rising COVID-19 case numbers.

The impacted area includes Abbotsford, Chilliwack, Agassiz Harrison, Hope and Mission.

The new restrictions, announced by Provincial Health Officer, Dr. Bonnie Henry, include:
  • Private indoor gatherings capped at five additional people, or one additional household, and outdoor gatherings limited to 10 people unless all participants are vaccinated.
  • Organized events limited to 10 people indoors or 50 outside unless all participants are fully vaccinated.
  • Outdoor sports limited to 50 participants unless all are fully vaccinated.
  • Ticketed events, gyms, and fitness classes require full vaccination.
  • In the rest of BC, people are only required to be partially vaccinated until Oct 24. That deadline has been moved up in the Fraser East region.
  • Masks required in all indoor workplaces, unless someone is alone, behind a barrier or able to distance appropriately.

For full event conditions, please refer to the regional order and provincial order surrounding gatherings and events.
On Sunday, government announced they will be extending the food delivery fee cap, which limits the total fees food delivery companies can charge. The cap will be extended until Dec. 31, 2021.

The order continues to limit fees charged to restaurants from food delivery companies to 15%, and 5% for other related fees, such as online ordering and processing fees.

Small-delivery service businesses that serve less than 500 restaurants will continue to be exempt from the order, which also prohibits delivery companies from reducing compensation for their drivers.

Similarly, the BCHA continues to advocate for caps on OTA commission rates. We will continue to keep you updated on this effort. ttps://news.gov.bc.ca/releases/2021JERI0061-00185

Destination BC is helping tourism businesses across the province to “Power Up” through a new digital mentorship program which will award successful applicants a digital service package valued at up to $5,000.

The Power Up! application-based program will provide 75 eligible BC-based, small and medium sized tourism businesses, sole proprietors, and non-profits across the province with free access to digital audit and technical services designed to improve their digital marketing activities and use of technology.

“Power Up is the latest digital program to be added to Destination BC’s suite of industry development opportunities,” said Richard Porges, President and CEO of Destination BC. “Strong digital expertise is increasingly important as virtually all travellers are online before, during, and after their trips. The program will bolster digital capabilities on a one-to-one basis with each qualifying tourism business, offering tailored digital support where each business needs it most.”
Successful applicants will be given access to a digital subject matter expert in a service area of their choice, who will work with them to improve their online capabilities. The service costs will be directly covered, up to a maximum of $5,000 per participant, and will include educational resources for further learning and ongoing implementation.

The application intake opened on September 20, 2021 at 9:00 am PST and will remain open until 85 applications are received, at which point the intake will close and applications will be reviewed based on eligibility criteria in the order they are received.

Reminder - go2HR Resources | Employment Tracker, Workplace Vaccinations, Survey

As BC continues to battle the 4th wave of the global pandemic, new issues surrounding vaccination status continue to arise. Currently there is no provincial mandate for mandatory vaccination of staff outside of the health care setting. It is up to the individual business to decide on their own policy. How can an employer navigate this situation while balancing health & safety, human rights, privacy and other related legal requirements?

go2HR has compiled a comprehensive suite of resources to help employers understand the issues involved better, and to help them decide on an option that would work best for them.

The go2HR Employment Tracker reports on monthly changes in employment in the BC Tourism and Hospitality industry. The Tracker draws primarily from the Labour Force Survey (LFS), a monthly household survey conducted by Statistics Canada. The LFS is the most timely source of data on the labour market across Canada.

BCHA INN THE NEWS

BCHA CEO & President Ingrid Jarrett joined spoke with Rob Munro at Infotel news surrounding occupancy and hotel statistics in 2020 vs. 2021 for the Okanagan region.

"In 2021, coupled with the lack of demand – no meetings, no conferences, no events, no music events, no crews, no corporate travel, no government travel, no international travel, no U.S., travellers – we have lost 30% of our workforce since 2019,” Ingrid Jarrett, president and CEO of the B.C. Hotel Association told iNFOnews.ca.

The 30% number is a national figure but is reflective of what happened in B.C., she said.

“As we’re looking to recover, hoping to grow occupancy, we can’t grow occupancy because we don’t have anyone to actually clean the rooms or open the restaurants or cook in the kitchens or any of those kinds of things,” Jarrett said. “We have whole wings of hotels that are closed because we have nobody to work.”

HOT OFF THE PRESS

Regional health restrictions will be introduced in the eastern Fraser Valley as the area deals with a spike in cases of COVID-19 and low vaccination rates, health officials announced Tuesday.
The new regional public health order covers Abbotsford, Chilliwack, Hope, Mission and Agassiz-Harrison. Officials said those communities are seeing a surge in the number of people diagnosed with COVID-19 — particularly those who are not vaccinated — and the caseload is putting a strain on regional hospitals.
