We Welcome Interesting Goodies for our Welcome Baskets!
The Chamber has teamed up with the Center of Hope to create gift baskets to welcome new members to the Chamber of Central Mass South. The Chamber presents our new members with gift baskets that will not only have a monetary value but also to give the recipient an opportunity to learn more about other Chamber members and their services. These baskets make a terrific first impression and are a great way to introduce your business to new prospects. Can you help us fill these baskets with interesting goodies?
We are always seeking interesting, practical items to include in our welcome baskets. We welcome your contributions of items like modest gift certificates, discount coupons, items with your company's logo like piggy banks, thumb drives and coffee mugs, free trial items, small items your company manufactures or whatever else might promote your company and be a value to our new members.
We are looking to assemble about a dozen baskets at a time so that time sensitive material will not be out of date when received. If you would like to donate items for this program, please drop them off at the Chamber office or give us a call to arrange pick up your donated items. Contact Alix at 508-347-2761 or e-mail [email protected] if you have any questions or to arrange a pickup. Thank you for your contributions!

North Brookfield, MA – For North Brookfield Savings Bank the holiday season is a special time of year. It is when people and communities come together, and what better way to do so than by helping make sure that all children in our communities experience a wonderful, joy-filled, holiday season.
Starting November 29th and running through December 20th North Brookfield Savings Bank’s Annual Toy Drive aims to ensure holiday wishes comes true for our younger community members. Monetary donations and new toys will be collected at all Bank branch locations. To further brighten the holidays, North Brookfield Savings Bank will also make a $1,750 donation to local toy drive programs for the purchase of additional toys.
During the Toy Drive, community members are welcome to visit any branch location to make their donations of new unwrapped toys for children. All toys collected will be donated to local toy programs in each community, to ensure that local children in need will receive holiday presents. This year, the Bank’s Ware branch location will be primarily accepting monetary donations to help their local toy program partner the Ware Police Department, who has reformatted their program to be more tailored to each family in need.
In addition to toys, NBSB will accept financial contributions in each branch location to purchase additional gifts for the toy drive. The Bank will match every dollar donated, as well as contribute $1 for every toy collected, up to $250 per branch location.
“As a local Bank that places a high importance on embracing and committing to the values of kindness and community support, North Brookfield Savings Bank is proud to continue the tradition of hosting our Annual Toy Drive at our locations,” said Marco Bernasconi, President of North Brookfield Savings Bank. “We want to ensure that every child has the opportunity to have a wonderful holiday season, this year and every year. We know this goal is possible with the continued support and kindness of our local community. We invite all of you to visit us, as you have so generously done in the past, to make your contribution.”
Donations are being accepted at these North Brookfield Savings Bank branches:
- North Brookfield Branch, 9 Gilbert Street – partnering with the North Brookfield Police Association’s Toys for Joys Program
- East Brookfield Branch, 100 West Main Street, Route 9 – partnering with the East Brookfield Toys for Joy Program
- West Brookfield Branch, 128 West Main Street, Route 9 – partnering with the West Brookfield Police Association Holiday Toy Program
- Ware Branch, 40 Main Street, Route 9 – partnering with the Ware Police Department Holiday Toy Program
- Belchertown Branch, 4 Daniel Shays Highway, Routes 9 and 202 – partnering with the Belchertown Firefighters Association Adopt-a-Family Program
- Palmer Branch, 1051 Thorndike Street – partnering with the Palmer Lions Club Holiday Toy Program

Bernasconi continued, “The holiday season is about caring for those around us and being generous. It is heartwarming every year to witness how our community members support each other. By partnering with the local toy drive organizations and our giving residents we are able to bring a child holiday cheer and truly embody the spirit of the holiday season. Thank you to everyone who plans to give this year and has supported this effort in the past.”

An Extraordinary Year of Lifesaving for Second Chance
Nonprofit Expanding Capacity in 2022 to Help All Pets in Need
EAST BROOKFIELD, MA (December 13, 2021) – From large-scale rescues to emergency surgeries, 2021 has been an extraordinary year of saving lives for Second Chance Animal Services. The nonprofit has responded to more emergency cases this year than ever before, saving pets with nowhere else to turn.
CEO Sheryl Blancato says, “By year’s end Second Chance will have helped over 40,000 pets. The total is very similar to 2019 and 2020, but this year so many of the pets we helped were in crisis.”
“Day after day, our hospitals are squeezing in another surgery to save a dog suffering from a life-threatening uterine infection or a cat who has eaten something he shouldn’t have,” relates Blancato who makes a point to visit each hospital throughout the week. “They arrive in a critical state. We have adjusted our schedules to accommodate as many emergency surgeries as possible because we may be their last chance. “
Blancato notes that some may be diagnosed by an emergency facility that isn’t able to perform surgery in time to save the pet due to the ongoing emergency veterinary care crisis. “Others are referred to us when emergency surgical costs are out of reach for those with limited budgets. Second Chance is one of the only hospitals in Massachusetts that offers subsidized rates for emergency care.”
Second Chance’s Almost Home transport facility has also been busier than ever, welcoming rescues from southern shelters that are near capacity. They also took in 73 cats from a local large-scale rescue this fall that included six pregnant moms. A total of 15 kittens were born, bringing the total to 88 for that one case alone.
Each pet that comes through Almost Home has all their medical needs met including a full veterinary exam and tests, vaccines, and spay or neuter surgery if necessary before they can go to the Adoption Center in East Brookfield to begin their search for a new home. The Adoption Center also takes in local surrenders and ensures their veterinary needs are met as well.
The incredible demand for help has put a strain, not only on the Second Chance staff, but on a limited budget as well. Supply costs continue to increase, and the tight labor market continues to drive labor cost upward. Blancato says that despite the rising costs, Second Chance is committed to expanding capacity in 2022. “We know there are many more pets who need help and we’ve set a goal to help 45,000 pets in the new year. We can’t let these pets down, but we can’t do it alone.”
Second Chance opened their long-awaited fourth Community Veterinary Hospital in Southbridge this fall. The facility is currently open three days a week and plans to accommodate a full schedule and add a weekly vaccine clinic in the new year as hiring and funding allow.
Those wishing to help can donate at secondchanceanimals.org/donate/ or checks can be mailed to Second Chance Animal Services, PO Box 136, East Brookfield, MA 01515.

Cornerstone Bank makes donation to Literacy Volunteers of Greater Worcester
Donation of $2,500 will go towards providing adults English language skills
WORCESTER, Mass. – Cornerstone Bank, a community bank with 12 locations throughout Central Massachusetts, has donated $2,500 to Literacy Volunteers of Greater Worcester to support their mission to provide adults with the English language skills they need to thrive. For 48 years, Literacy Volunteers of Greater Worcester has been providing one-to-one and small group English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) tutoring as well as literacy tutoring, and in recent years, adding online tutoring and independent learning.
“In the greater Worcester area, 34% of households speak a language other than English at home,” said Cornerstone Bank CEO Todd Tallman. “Literacy Volunteers of Greater Worcester are doing amazing things by providing free ESOL education to adults within our community. The leadership, vision, and dedication of the Board of Directors is key to the organization’s success in serving constituents in the Worcester area. We are proud that members of our team volunteer their time for this organization and we support their goals any way we can.”
In just the past year, more than 100 volunteers and 12 part-time specialized ESOL teachers dedicated their time to help 382 literacy students and more than 100 tutoring students learn to read, write, and speak the English language. These students are immigrants and refugees representing 52 different countries and speaking 38 different languages.
“The free, flexible, and individualized support students get leads them in the right direction to achieve goals beyond English language proficiency including citizenship, employment, and further education,” continued Tallman. “We look forward to seeing Literacy Volunteers of Greater Worcester continue to create opportunities for people looking to succeed on our community.”

Explore The Last Green Valley – Photo Contest Winners Announced
The Last Green Valley, Inc. (TLGV) announces the 13 winning photos gracing its 2022 calendar. TLGV’s “Explore the Last Green Valley” calendar for 2022 features magnificent photos of The Last Green Valley National Heritage Corridor.
The coveted cover shot was taken by Sandee Harraden of Woodstock, CT and is called “Ruby-throated Hummingbird.” The photo is a beautiful image of a hummingbird drinking nectar as it twists its body to get the perfect angle for the nectar.
This is the second TLGV calendar cover Harraden has won since 2015.
“I’ve always been interested in birds,” Harraden said. “But I also enjoy watching the bird behavior. Learning photography, I can stop the moment and get all the details to understand what I am seeing.”
Harraden fell in love with photography 11 years ago. She is always trying to learn more about photography while hoping to inspire others to love nature through photography. In addition to the cover photo, Harraden’s “Northern Cardinal with His Fledgling” is the April photo. Harraden’s images are the results of hours of watching the birds with her camera at the ready and positioning herself as the light moves.
“I think The Last Green Valley is a wonderful organization and it also inspires people to enjoy the outdoors and brings awareness and helps people to connect to nature. I think that’s really important for people to have that inspiration.”
The other winning photos are: “A Sparkling Day,” by Ulla Britt Roemer of Pomfret, CT; “Ponemah,” by Nick Velles of Franklin, CT; “Chasing Waterfalls,” “Sometimes You Feel Like a Nut…” and “Let it Go,” by Sarah L. Hamby of Danielson, CT; “Calves on a Sunny Day,” by Joseph Orefice of Union, CT; “European Praying Mantis at Lavender Farm,” and “Monarch with Sunflowers,” by Heather Brunelle of Lebanon, CT; “Sunset at Blue Slope,” by Susan Trapp of North Stonington, CT; “Fall from Above,” by Ryan Heilemann of Brooklyn, CT; and “Ready to go Kayaking at Hopeville Pond” by Gail Miller of North Franklin, CT.
The more than 65 entries went through a blind review of the photos by a committee which chose the winners. Additional smaller photos are used throughout the calendar. The 2022 calendar is also filled with interesting tidbits about the natural and cultural history of the National Heritage Corridor.
“This year the entries were very high quality,” said Lois Bruinooge, executive director of TLGV. “It was difficult to choose only 13. We’re excited by the stunning photos in the 2022 calendar.”
The calendar is on sale for $15. You can order one in the gift shop at TheLastGreenValley.org or call the TLGV Office at 860-774-3300 to order a copy. All proceeds support The Last Green Valley’s programs to protect our natural and historic resources. TLGV is a 501(c)(3) non-profit.
The Last Green Valley National Heritage Corridor is the last stretch of dark night sky in the coastal sprawl between Boston and Washington, D.C. The Last Green Valley, Inc. works for you in the National Heritage Corridor. Together we can care for it, enjoy it and pass it on!
