Dear Friends-

The season of Lent is set aside to be a time of fasting, self-denial, spiritual growth, conversion, and simplicity. Lent, which comes from the Germanic word for springtime, can be viewed as a spiritual spring-cleaning. Lent is a time for taking spiritual inventory and then cleaning out those things that hinder our relationships with God and one another.

There are a few basic tasks that traditionally have been associated with Lent: fasting, almsgiving, and prayer.

When we ‘fast’ we learn self-control. Some choose to give up things that they have a strong desire for like sweets, caffeine and alcohol. Others choose to fast from sins, or things that separate them from others and God like judgment, complaining and worry.

During Lent, we’re invited to consider our prayer life too. You may make it your aim to set aside time each day in silence or read the daily office or join us each week for worship here at St. Peter’s.

Almsgiving is also a Lenten discipline. The hope is that turning outward to others turns our heart to God.   To that end, you may want join others in keeping a ‘mite box’ or by making a donation to a cause close to your heart.

I pray that this season of Lent brings refreshment and preparation for the season of Easter.

                                                                                        --George

Scam Emails from “George”

Last week a number of you received emails that purported to come from “George from St. Peter’s”. Hopefully all of you recognized this common scam and didn’t answer the request for money or information. Our diocese recently sent out a communication regarding this ongoing problem.

Online scams and malicious behavior continue to target churches and church leaders. These scams are unlikely to stop, and there is nothing we can do to prevent them.  Awareness and vigilance are our best defense.

Scammers’ tactics vary and evolve, but a common one is to send e-mails or text messages that appear to be from a known organization or trusted church leader (such as a bishop or rector).  They typically ask for urgent help or a favor, and at some stage request that the recipient buy and electronically send gift cards, make donations via money transfer or provide personal information.

Please let us know when you receive these emails and texts so we can report them appropriately. In the meantime, you should know that official emails from St. Peter’s either george@stpetersweston.org or office@stpetersweston.org.

Afghan Ministry Update

Love was in the air on Tuesday in Manchester at our Valentines Day celebration. The ladies were presented with roses, enjoyed candy and cake and went home with goody bags filled with an assortment of perfumes, soaps and beauty items donated by the Weston/Wayland community. During our time together, the women gave some of the lucky volunteers including Hansi, a henna tattoo. We used left over beauty items as prizes for a “learning english” bingo game which they really enjoyed. Many had come dressed in red for the occasion and beautifully made up. A special day for all. We hope you’ll be able to meet the families at the Thank You lunch on Sunday, March 5th at noon. Please respond ASAP so we can get a headcount. We could also use some help with set-up, child care and clean up. Contact Karen if you can help. This is a big ask but if you’d be willing to help with transportation by doing a round trip pick up and/or return to Manchester, it would help us be able to get more families here. Please let Hansi know if you can drive some families. First Parish in Weston hosted a pop up pillow sale for us last Sunday. Over $400 in pillows, aprons, cosmetic bags and scrunchies were sold! Next up St. Elizabeth’s in Sudbury where Hansi will be giving the homily!

Thank you,

Hansi and Karen

Waltham's Bristol Lodge Seeking More Food Donations

Local resident Laurie Grossman has expressed an ongoing need for food for our neighbors at the Waltham Bristol Lodge. The food pantry serves about 200 families weekly and is in need of more supplies, including all types of shelf-stable food as well as fresh produce. Families line up at 8AM in all kinds of weather to receive food at 9AM.

Food can be dropped off at the Bristol Lodge location at 545 Moody St. by 8AM on Wednesdays. If you cannot make it to the Lodge at that time, Laurie is happy to have people drop off items at her house during the week. Please contact her at laurie.grossman@comcast.net to get the address.

Food insecurity is real and it is right next door, so please consider how to help.

Home Communion and Prayer

church set up.jpg

Though many of St. Peter's parishioners have returned to worshiping and receiving Holy Communion in person inside our church building, we know it is not yet safe for all of us to do so. We will continue to live-stream our services so that we may include as many as possible in our offerings of praise and thanksgiving to God.

If it is not yet safe for you to worship with us in person, and you would like to receive Holy Communion and/or a share a time of prayer at your home, please contact the Parish Office.

If you would like to schedule a time during the week for private prayer in the church, please contact the church office.

St. Peter's is committed to continuing to make our worship space safe and welcoming to all. We hope to have you back with us in person as soon as doing so is the right choice for you.
