Dear Friends-
The season of Lent is set aside to be a time of fasting, self-denial, spiritual growth, conversion, and simplicity. Lent, which comes from the Germanic word for springtime, can be viewed as a spiritual spring-cleaning. Lent is a time for taking spiritual inventory and then cleaning out those things that hinder our relationships with God and one another.
There are a few basic tasks that traditionally have been associated with Lent: fasting, almsgiving, and prayer.
When we ‘fast’ we learn self-control. Some choose to give up things that they have a strong desire for like sweets, caffeine and alcohol. Others choose to fast from sins, or things that separate them from others and God like judgment, complaining and worry.
During Lent, we’re invited to consider our prayer life too. You may make it your aim to set aside time each day in silence or read the daily office or join us each week for worship here at St. Peter’s.
Almsgiving is also a Lenten discipline. The hope is that turning outward to others turns our heart to God. To that end, you may want join others in keeping a ‘mite box’ or by making a donation to a cause close to your heart.
I pray that this season of Lent brings refreshment and preparation for the season of Easter.
