Greetings!
Can you believe there are fewer than seven weeks left in 2022?
This year has flown by with events, celebrations, and first-ever programs and services for Angelenos. As we approach the holiday season and a new year, I know there is a sense of change and uncertainty in the air. But when I travel around our city, I find hope.
I find hope in the young people who are standing firm against hate and division. I find hope in the progress we're making to protect civil rights. At LA Civil Rights, I find hope in our origin story and the multiethnic coalition that made our department a reality (more on that below).
No matter how you voted on election day or what neighborhood you call home, I hope you are ready to fight for our city's future - and all our diverse communities. We have a chance to build a Los Angeles for everyone, and we can only do it together. No matter who you are, we all can make a difference - and I look forward to making that difference with you.
Keep the faith and keep the fight,
- Capri Maddox
Executive Director
Civil + Human Rights and Equity Department

The Story of LA Civil Rights
|
Do you know how LA Civil Rights was created? We aren't just a product of city hall - we were made by organized workers, motivated organizers and a multiethnic coalition fighting for a more just Los Angeles.
Now, for the first time, we are telling our origin story with the workers and organizers who led the fight - from the LA Black Worker Center to IDEPSCA and more. We just released a video featuring leaders form these organizations describing the years-long effort to bring discrimination enforcement to Los Angeles.
We are honored to carry this work forward with the workers and organizers who helped make this happen. Remember, if you've faced discrimination in the private sector areas of commerce, education, employment and housing, file a complaint here.

Friday was Veteran's Day, when we honor those who served our country in the U.S. military and their families. We honor your service and sacrifice for our country.
Veterans face a different battle after leaving the armed forces in mental health, employment and even homelessness. It's important to recognize the unique circumstances veterans and their families face in civilian life.

Standing Against Antisemitism
|
We've been shocked and concerned by the rise anti-Semitic hate incidents and hate speech in Los Angeles and across the nation. We cannot allow hate against any community to go unchecked. That's why LA Civil Rights was proud to stand with the Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles and the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) earlier this month for "Fighting Antisemitism Together," an event with Mayor Garcetti and community leaders.
Our Director of Policy & Enforcement Joumana Silyan-Saba spoke on the need for cross-cultural solidarity, and the need for more attention and investment in hate prevention. Click here to learn more and watch a recording of the event.
