(LtoR) UUMC M4 Student Kayla Beamon, Dr. Brent Smith, and Richard Easterling.

The MAFP was excited to meet with the members of the Mississippi Chapter of the SNMA (Student National Medical Association) at UMMC. The SNMA supports underrepresented minority medical students, addressing the needs of underserved communities, and increasing the number of clinically excellent, culturally competent and socially conscious physicians.

AAFP Delegate and MAFP Physician Workforce Chair, Dr. Brent Smith of Cleveland and AAFP Board Student Member and MAFP Foundation Board Member, Richard Easterling, shared their experiences on the state and national level and encouraged students to get involved.

The MAFP Foundation sponsored a lunch to help recruit 11 new student members.

MAFP staffers Kana Butler and DeAnna Dillard attended the event to help promote the MAFP and hand out MAFP swag.

Welcome MAFP Staffer Kana Butler

Please welcome Kana Butler to our MAFP Staff as the Public Awareness Director. Kana joins us with a background in health sciences and program management. She provides a wealth of knowledge in the healthcare industry and is excited to work with the team! Kana lives in Brandon with Jason and their three boys. They purchased a "funny farm" in 2020 and have a plethora of horses, cows, a barn cat, and new puppy! They enjoy outdoor adventures including camping, kayaking, and hiking. Welcome Kana!

AMA House of Delegates in Hawaii

MAFP Members (LtoR) Drs. Carlos Latorre, Randy Easterling, AAFP Board Chair, Dr. Sterling Ransone and Dr. Jennifer Bryan.

The MAFP is well represented on the national stage at the AMA Interim meeting in Honolulu, Hawaii. Of the 6 Mississippi Delegates to the AMA, 3 are Mississippi Family Physicians, two of which are former MAFP Presidents. We are proud to have a hometown Family Physician prospective to the very vital issues facing America’s physicians. Your MAFP delegate members to the AMA are standing in strong support of a Mississippi resolution that requires Physician supervision of Emergency Departments (not APRN) supervision. The biggest issue in this meeting is stopping the proposed Medicaid payment cuts. We are strongly supporting an increase in payment, at least to keep up with inflation.

Colleagues,

As part of the American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM)

Foundation's support of the shift to competency-based medical education (CBME),

we are sponsoring a scholarship to attend the ACGME course on CBME in residency

education. The intent is to “train the trainers” – the people who will work

across residencies and within learning networks to support implementation and

innovation in CBME.

Some of you may have heard about the ACGME course. The course is

run by Dr. Eric Holmboe and his staff and will be held in Chicago, IL for five

days. We’ve had a pilot group of experienced family medicine educators go

through the course and their feedback has been outstanding. Importantly, Dr.

Holmboe has opened up a special session for family medicine which will take

place May 7-12, 2023. Although not listed on the brochure, this is a new

in-person course in the spring—and the best description of this live course is

available here.

The funding announcement

describes how to apply for the scholarship. The application deadline is December

16, 2022, and requires a letter of interest, a letter from the Residency

Director or Chair, and a resume.

Please forward to any faculty that you think may be interested in

this opportunity.

Sincerely yours,

Warren Newton, MD MPH
