Congregational Kiddush luncheon this week is generously sponsored by the Sabloff Family in honour of a Hanukkah back together again!

Thank you to all of our recent Kiddush sponsors. We are grateful for your support. Congregational Kiddush helps us build connections that make KBI a strong, vibrant community. You can sponsor a Kiddush to honour someone, remember someone, celebrate a Simcha, or “just because!”

We are currently seeking sponsors for our 2022 Kiddushim. At this time, we will only be offering a congregational kiddush on the weeks with sponsorship. For more information on these and other sponsorship opportunities, please contact Rena at (613) 728-3501 x225 or [email protected]
RABBI KENTER'S DVAR
Hanukkah 2021

The Rabbis had a problem. They were creating the new version of Judaism after the destruction of the Second Temple and were doing their best to determine what was worthy of preserving and what was no longer consistent with their approach to our religion. Perhaps the most famous example was the dropping of sacrifices and replacing them with prayer. In that way, they kept the essence of the practice (creating connection with God) but found a more meaningful way to accomplish that objective through prayer.

A lesser-known example of this problem related to Hanukkah. While the essence of the holiday (a small group can accomplish great things when God/right is on one’s side) remained meaningful, the rabbis didn’t like the Maccabees/Hasmonean dynasty that were at the centre of it. They didn’t think that their religious zealotry was consistent with their approach to Judaism, but even more problematic was the fact that they usurped the kingship of Israel from the rightful leaders. They took over both the political and religious components of Jewish life, which were never meant to be held in the same hands. There are many blessings that happen in all of our lives such as the birth of a child, grandchild, or great-grandchild; the engagement or marriage of a loved one; or a promotion at work or a volunteer award.  These events lend balance to times of sadness, such as the death or illness of a loved one. We at Kehillat Beth Israel are grateful for the opportunity to share these moments with you - to be a source of community in both times of celebration and times of sorrow.

And in the spirit of gratitude, we also take this opportunity to thank the members of our community for their charitable gifts to the synagogue. We could not do the important work that we do at Kehillat Beth Israel without your generous support. We are so thankful for your continued contributions that allow us to grow and thrive. Todah Rabbah!
