Principal's Message

It was another busy short week at Greenbriar as we continued fall assessments and completed our first round of SHIELD testing. I was so proud of the students who all listened to directions, followed safety guidelines, and tried their best with this new process. We will continue to become more efficient as we get more experience with SHIELD testing each Monday morning.

It was great to see many new faces joining our first virtual PTO meeting of the year. We have such a dedicated community and it's exciting to see the energy and new ideas that our parents bring in support of our students and staff. Please read the notes from the meeting attached in the PTO section below and consider attending our October meeting if you're able.

Have a great weekend!

Warmly,
Ginny
Change in Recess Procedures
We have determined that it is safe for grade levels to mix classes at recess, meaning all classes within the same grade level can interact beginning on Monday 9/20. Each grade level will be assigned 3-4 zones in which to play during their designated recess times. Factors that went into making this decision include the following:
  • NBJH has used this model safely since the start of the year (6th grade classes mix and the majority of 6th graders are not yet vaccinated but they have not had an increase in cases).
  • We do not include outside interactions during contact tracing (per the health department).
  • We have heard concerns from staff, parents, and students about how isolating recess can be for certain kids who are not in class with their closest friends.
  • Students are continuing to mix outside of school hours for extra-curricular activities, KidCare, clubs, etc.
  • SHIELD testing is in place now and allows us to catch asymptomatic cases early.
  • If recess is indoor due to inclement weather we will remain in their individual classrooms.

SHIELD Testing Opt In/Out Changes
Parents who wish to change their child’s status, either opting in or opting out should complete this form so that we can accurately track changes. Change requests are not immediate; requests must be submitted by noon on Friday so we are able to update our records for the following week. Please also email your child's teacher alerting her to your child's change in status.

Fall Assessment Window Continues *repeat*
Students in 2nd through 5th grades continue to take fall assessments including the NWEA MAP assessment. Students in grades K and 1 will take the AIMSWeb+ math and reading screener and first through fourth (and some fifth) graders will meet with teachers to complete the Fountas & Pinnell benchmark reading assessment. Teachers use all of these assessments to better understand and target learning goals for each student. Parents will receive MAP score reports in October after the district's testing window closes. Below are the dates when remaining MAP tests will be given. Teachers will follow up with specific information about timing.

3rd grade MAP Reading: September 22nd
5th grade MAP Math: September 23rd

Volunteers Needed
Looking to get involved? We are looking for volunteers to help with Birthday Signs and we also need a Greenbriar representative for Gift Cards.

  • Gift Card Plus: 1-2 Volunteers needed to distribute and collect order forms for gift cards and then distribute the various orders to Greenbriar families. This program typically runs 3x a year allowing families to purchase through the school (which gives a percentage back to the PTO).

  • Birthday Signs: 5-10 more Volunteers needed to set up and take down birthday yard signs during their designated week. Once volunteers sign up, they will be contacted by the committee chairs for their “birthday” week.

Please contact Marie Junkmann or Kim Yen if you want to get involved in either of these opportunities!

Should you have any questions, feel free to reach us at: [email protected]
