Programming
Art with a Heart had a busy month preparing for the launch of 16 in-school programs while continuing its ongoing out-of-school time classes. It has been an exciting time as students hurried into their Art with a Heart classes eager to get their hands on art materials and learn new skills as artists. The school year started with lots of color and creativity. Examples of some of the projects explored in the last month include: mixed media painted value canvases (Lifebridge Health), Giacometti inspired wire figure sculptures (Christopher's Place Employment Academy), mask making through shapes and textures (Woodhome Elementary /Middle School), fall trees with paint and tissue paper (Mary Rodman Elementary School), and mixed media whimsical self portraits for Opposite Day (Hazelwood Elementary Middle School).

A Collaboration of Cultures and Art
Art with a Heart's work in Baltimore's partnership city of Ashkelon, Israel continued in the month of September. With the help and support of almost 1,000 volunteers in both cities, the project is nearing completion. Beautiful friendships have been formed, language barriers have been broken and an abundance of gratitude has been shown. We will miss our new friends when the project is complete but the kindness imparted by Amigour and Ashkelon communities will stay with us forever. Thank you to The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation for their bold vision for this project.
Intergenerational Workshops in the Severn Community
Art with a Heart has enjoyed meeting over 80 volunteers at various workshops in the Severn community during the month of September. Individuals of all ages from Pascal Senior Activity Center, Meade Village Boys & Girls Club, Anne Arundel County Local Development Council, and O'Malley Senior Center completed various sections of the mosaic mural for the new Severn Intergenerational Community Center. When completed, the mural will be 600 sq. feet and will be created by the community, for the community.
Art of Leadership
This month, Art of Leadership students discussed Intersectionality and how this framework can inform us about structural issues of discrimination and inequality, and guide our actions as everyday advocates and leaders. Students used Legos to represent personal and group identities, engaged in conversations about identity, wrote letters to their future selves, and created skits to practice everyday leadership through challenging conversations.
HeARTworks/HeARTwares
HeARTworks provided an interactive and fun kids activity for Hampdenfest (after a two year hiatus!) as a member of the Hampden Village Merchant Association. Children and family members created tropical frogs from recycled materials and the frogs even hopped!

HeARTworks began programming at Woodbourne School with a community art project. Members of the school are creating clay tiles inspired by their community values. The final piece will adorn the school's hallways later this fall.
Thank you, Volunteers!
Art with a Heart is grateful for the volunteers who shared their time and talent with the organization during the month of September: The Associated, T. Rowe Price, Yahoo Media, The Bryn Mawr School and members of the UMBC Choice Program.
