UCSF CCMBM Core Services Newsletter - September 2021
Headshot of Dr. Steven Cummings
Congratulations to Steven R. Cummings, MD
Professor Emeritus of Medicine at UC San Francisco
for receiving the ASBMR 2021 William F. Neuman award!
Dr. Cummings gives thanks to the following Coordinating Center team and CCMBM members Dennis Black, PhD; Michael Nevitt, PhD, MPH; Ann Schwartz, PhD, MPH; and others who have been instrumental in his history of work.

This esteemed award will be presented on October 1 at 8:00 AM (PT) at the ASBMR 2021 Annual Meeting in San Diego, California.
October 20, 12:30-2:30pm; Virtual Event
This is a hands-on workshop focused on implementing and training an image classifier model to classify Covid-19 x-rays. We will showcase how to load and visualize data, balance and split your dataset, and train a model using the PyTorch framework.
The Imaging Core introduces the new GE 3 Tesla MRI Premier system located at China Basin. This system features strong gradients (80 mT/m) as well as fast slew rates (200 T/m/s). In Figure 1, we show examples of knee and hand images with isotropic voxel size. The knee images were acquired in sagittal orientation with an isotropic voxel size of 0.6 mm and subsequently reconstructed in coronal and axial planes as shown. In order to see smaller structures in the hand these images were acquired coronally with 0.4 mm isotropic resolution.

The new Premier system also comes with a new high flexible 30-channel coil providing 65 cm of coverage that is designed to fully conform to the body part of interest. In Figure 2, we show a high-resolution hip image acquired with the new coil. The high signal to noise and contrast can be clearly appreciated.

For information on accessing and using the new MRI scanner and coils, contact Roland Krug, MQIR Core Co-Director.
Did you miss our last seminar or technical workshop? Or are you looking for imaging equipment or skeletal biology standard operating protocols? Members have access to workshops and seminar recordings, protocols, and archived newsletters on the CCMBM Members Only Site. Never miss out on all things related to the Center!

For login assistance or questions on the members only site, inquire with Daniel Davis.
The Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Study Design Core is offering up to 6 hours of free UCSF Clinical and Translational Institute (CTSI) consultation time for all CCMBM members. Skeletal Biology and Biomechanics and Imaging Cores are also offering service discounts to Early Stage Investigator and Trainee members. Please contact each Core to utilize these member discounts.

Contact Daniel Davis for eligibility questions.

Do you want to create a 'Welcome to the Lab' letter, but don't know where to start? The letter is a document that can be shared to lab members to set expectations and understandings around behavior, productivity, culture and your research vision. This is an interactive workshop and you will leave with a working document to use and implement.
