Parent Teacher Conferences
October 26 & 27 
 
Fall Parent/Teacher Conferences are scheduled for Wednesday, October 26, and Thursday, October 27, from 4:00 p.m. - 7:45 p.m. 

Hallsville Primary and Intermediate Schools will schedule conferences using Parent Square, and the link should be sent to families today, Friday, October 7. Progress reports and grade cards will be sent home on October 25, prior to conferences. 

Hallsville Middle School will schedule conferences by grade level via Parent Square. There are a limited number of conference slots available. If you are unable to schedule a conference time on these dates, please reach out to your child’s teachers to set up a meeting.  

Hallsville High School will have open conferences in the secondary cafeteria on both nights. Teachers will be stationed at tables around the cafeteria, and parents will have the opportunity to visit with core and non-core teachers. The High School Counseling Department will also be hosting a FASFA Frenzy on the night of October 26th during parent-teacher conferences from 4:00 p.m. - 7:30 p.m in the high school media center. Parents and students are invited to get help with creating a FASFA ID and completing the FASFA.

All families and grade levels are highly encouraged to attend fall conferences!
Getting Ready for Fall
Fall Parties & Dances

Hallsville Primary School's Fall Party is on Friday, October 28th. Students are asked to wear their costumes to school that day. The students will parade through the gym beginning at 8:45 a.m. Class parties will be from 9:00 a.m. - 9:30 a.m.  

Hallsville Intermediate School's Fall Party is on Friday, October 28th. Students wishing to wear a costume must come to school wearing them. Teachers will be celebrating throughout the day with fun crafts and activities rather than one big party. We invite parents to join us from 2:30 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.  

Hallsville Middle School Student Council is hosting a dance on Friday, October 14, from 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. The cost of admission is $3, which helps fund Student Council activities. Students attending are encouraged to wear a costume. 

Hallsville High School Student Council is sponsoring a Halloween Costume contest on Friday, October 28th. The cost to enter is $2. Categories include Best Guy, Best Girl, Best Couple/Group, and Most Creative Costume. Students who wish to enter the contest and participate should report to the North Gym and have their photos taken before 8:00 AM. Winners will be announced during Tribe Time. Funds raised go directly back to Student Council to fund activities.

Winter Sports

Hallsville Middle School winter sports kick off soon with boys and girls wrestling and basketball! All athletes must complete and turn in a pre-participation physical exam form and proof of insurance information before participating in their first practice. In addition, all athletes must participate in 14 days of practice before being eligible to participate in any competition. 

Middle school wrestling is open to boys and girls in 7th and 8th grade. A parent meeting is scheduled for Monday, October 17, and practice begins Tuesday, October 18. Additional information can be found here

Congratulations All-District Choir
6 Students Make All-District Choir

On Saturday, September 17, eight of our high school choir members ventured to Hannibal, Missouri to audition to be in our All-District Choir. These students have been working very diligently since school started to learn their audition pieces and practice sight-reading. During the audition process, students have to sing a solo for a judge and then go to a different room to be judged on their sight-reading. The students have to identify key signatures and sight-read music they have never seen before, in front of a judge. This is an incredibly difficult and nerve-racking experience that the students choose to do. 
All of these students worked extremely hard, and we could not be more proud of them. In November, six of our students that made the choir will travel to Moberly to join other students from the district to make up two large choirs. They will spend all day practicing and then put on a concert that night. Juniors Olivia Ganley and Shana Rounsavall will also be auditioning to be a part of the All-State Choir.

September Highlights

RECOGNITIONS
Mr. Sides recognized middle school math teacher Kelli Anthes. Mrs. Anthes offered to help the high school with its math teacher shortage and has taken on additional responsibilities to help her former students succeed. 

Mr. Cooley recognized six staff members for their work during the high school’s “Meet the Teacher” night. Delisa Jeffries, Dianna Orr, Jessica Baker, Brenda Spurling, MaCall Lankford, and Christine McMullin all worked extremely hard that evening, running Chromebook checkout and ensuring that students were able to receive their devices that evening. 

The district’s August headcount, ADA, and the number of students who attended at least one day in August were presented to the board for review. All three metrics demonstrate an increase, which indicates higher student enrollment for the current school year. 

TUITION FOR NONRESIDENT STUDENTS
Each year, the Board sets tuition rates for students who reside outside the district. Our tuition rate for 2021-22 was $8,165 per full-time nonresident student. The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education reported expenditures per pupil at $8,691. The Board approved the 2022-2023 tuition increase to $8,691. 

The district assessment plan serves as a general guide to the implementation of student testing within the district. The assessment plan is reviewed annually and approved each year by the Board of Education. 

CTE ENHANCEMENT GRANT GREENHOUSE UPGRADES
The Board approved the proposals for the procurement and installation of motorized shades and an irrigation system in the existing greenhouse. The district will be reimbursed at 50%-75% of the allowable costs using funds received under Missouri's CTE Enhancement Grant program. These improvements will extend the annual greenhouse growing season and provide students with experience in using such greenhouse systems.

K-5 PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
DESE has announced a new initiative focused on the Science of Reading. The Missouri Read, Lead, Exceed initiative will use some of the federal relief funding to support student literacy. Several of our K-5 teachers will join this year’s cohort, which will offer them in-depth training in Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling (LETRS). This training requires teachers to commit to a two-year program where they will meet face-to-face for 6 hours, four times each year. In between each in-person training session, there are 8 self-paced learning sessions that include online instruction, independent reading, in-class practice, and a reflective portfolio. We have shared this opportunity with our teachers and are excited to have several who will join a cohort this year.

ATHLETIC ADMISSION PRICES
Our athletic admission prices have been stagnant for over twenty years. However, the event costs associated with our competitions have also risen consistently over that same time. The current rate for non-football competitions has been set at $3 for adults, $2 for students, and senior citizens are admitted free of charge. Starting in the winter season, admission will be $4 for adults, and the district will keep the same rates for students and senior citizens.

Bond Construction Updates

Bond construction at the middle school and athletic complex is currently in the Design Development phase. At the conclusion of the Design Development phase, additional project design documents will be provided to the district for review and feedback, and updated cost estimates will be provided by the construction manager at-risk to guide the Board's decision-making. Design development is expected to conclude by October. Updates on the middle school and athletic complex can be found on the district’s home page by clicking “Building our Tribe.”

In addition, during the August meeting, members of the Board of Education expressed interest in exploring additional revenue streams to support the upcoming construction projects in light of increased construction costs. The district engaged Stifel to determine which options may be available to the district, along with our capacity on lease purchase options that will not expose the district to undue budget stress. Stifel’s analysis concludes the district can comfortably engage in a facility lease purchase arrangement of up to $1.5 million without placing unsustainable strain on the operating budget. Mr. Hoffman, the district’s budget consultant, agreed that this is within the capacity of the budget. Stifel is currently in conversations with financial institutions on expected interest rates. If the Board elects to pursue this option, Mr. Downs and Mr. Hoffman agree that it should be completed soon to lock in lower interest rates.

School pictures arrived last week! Inside your child’s picture package, you will find a re-order slip. You can use this slip to order additional prints or photo gifts at inter-state.com. Retake & Make Up Day is scheduled for Wednesday, October 26. 

Retakes: For families that have already ordered a photo package.
If your child would like to have their picture retaken, you'll need to send the complete original picture package back to school with your child. New packages will be sent to the school in a few weeks.

Fundraiser Pick Up & Family Fun Night

Students in grades PreK-5 are invited to join the Hallsville PTO on Thursday, October 20, from 5:00 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. at Hallsville Intermediate School for a Jump Party, Chicken Patty Dinner, and Book Fair Night! This is their way of saying thank you for helping to raise over $9,000 during the fall fundraiser! The Family Fun Night will have multiple bounce houses set up in the intermediate gym, and OPAA will be serving chicken patty meals. Mrs. Briedwell will also have the Scholastic Book Fair open that evening for shoppers. In order to better plan, please RSVP through Parent Square.

Hallsville Youth Opportunities & Events

Hallsville Kids Club YOUTH WRESTLING will have registration on Sunday, October 23rd from 2-4 pm and Thursday, October 27th from 6-7:30 pm. A camp for those interested in learning more about wresting will be held on Sunday, October 23th from 2-4 pm during registration. Students ages 5-14 are welcome. This youth club is a great transition for when the older kids are ready for Middle School and High School wrestling. See the flyer for more details and contact info!

The Hallsville Youth Basketball Association (HYBA), is a non-school sponsored organization for Hallsville youth. Registration is now open for the 5th and 6th grade boys and girls basketball season. Registration must be completed by Monday, October 5. Registration for 3rd and 4th grades will be available in late October. 

Girls in grades 3rd through 5th are invited to bring someone special to the annual "Light of My Life" dance hosted by the Varsity Cheerleaders on Sunday, October 16. This year’s theme is “50’s Sock Hop,” so grab poodle skirts and leather jackets and hop on out for a great night of food and dancing. Doors open at 1:45 p.m. and the dance is from 2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. The first part of the dance will be whole group instruction of 1950s dance moves. The remaining time will be spent practicing the new dance moves. The cost is $5 per person.

Show-Me State Games is hosting its annual Pumpkin Fun Run on Sunday, October 16, in Columbia. The fun run is open to all students in kindergarten through 5th grade. The top 3 schools in attendance will win $500 for their PE department! 

The Hallsville Park Board will host their 7th annual Trick or Treat in the Park on Saturday, October 22 at 5:00 p.m. There will be free games, candy, hot dogs, and a costume contest.
