Introducing Sarah Wright, Director of International Education

Sarah Wright

By Sarah Wright

I am a typical lifelong learner and Mount Airy native. After stints in investments in Massachusetts, medical research in Rhode Island, and grad school for an MFA in Creative Writing in fiction in Los Angeles, I returned home.

I knew early in my career in investments that I wanted to work with college students. At that time, I began managing our formal college internship program and college partnerships. Going home to share my love for and power in writing with students who shared a similar background seemed ideal. My goals were simple: help students become better writers, see the value in writing, and know a big world exists outside of the area—if I could go see it, they could too.

I spent 14-years teaching at Surry Community College. The last four have been spent teaching English, serving also as the lead instructor of languages and humanities—managing the Community Spanish Interpreting program, among others. My work also included being the leader of International Education and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion on campus.

I studied political science and history with a concentration in African Studies (sub-Saharan political systems) as an undergraduate at East Carolina. I also hold an MFA in creative writing- fiction from Antioch University Los Angeles and an MS in Political Science and a certificate in National Security and Intelligence from the University of Nebraska at Omaha. In May, I will complete my doctorate in Educational Leadership from East Carolina. Go Pirates! My research focuses on access and completion of Latinx students through culturally responsive support in rural community colleges. In my free-time, I enjoy spending time and playing sports with my godsons, keeping in touch with my former students, assisting in the Latinx Community, and traveling, of course.

I’ve been here two days, and I have a lot to learn, but I’m positive I’m exactly where I should be.

Five Things to Know

  1. Travel: One place I would love to travel to is Japan. The history and beauty of the country would be worth a trip to me.
  2. Book: One book I have enjoyed recently is Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking. This book is a fascinating look into the study of introverts vs. extroverts.
  3. Food: I love desserts. My favorite would have to be my mom's chocolate pie.
  4. Streaming Show: Grey's Anatomy. I am way behind in watching this for the first time but I am loving it.
  5. Joyful Experience: Graduating college. I was the first member of my family to graduate from college and it remains a huge source of joy for me.

Reflections on DDCC's Summer Institute

By Emily Dietrich

This summer, from July 24-July 27, 25 faculty participated in the Center for Teaching and Learning’s Summer Institute. This year’s topic surrounded engaging online learners.

The Institute began with a familiar face: Dr. Derek Bruff, who has led sessions for 2 previous active learning cohorts, facilitated a session surrounding online student engagement. Throughout the next four days, a total of 12 different faculty and staff facilitated sessions covering topics from using the new video platform, YuJa, to using groups in online courses. Faculty wrapped up the week by recording videos of their learning and the implications for revisions they will do to one of their courses.

We asked faculty to reflect on how their understanding of teaching online or engaging students online changed as a result of their participation in this year’s Summer Institute. Here’s what some of our faculty shared:

  • “I learned strategies for teaching online courses that foster personal relationships between the instructor and the student as well as between students. The summer institute made me realize that online courses can be as engaging and collaborative as a traditional course.”
  • “One example would be commenting on discussion forums during the week that students are completing them, instead of doing what I've historically done which is to just comment when grading them.”
  • “I learned that engaging with online students is crucial to building an effective online course. The summer institute gave me multiple strategies for engaging students including discussion boards, microvideos, interactive lessons, and polling.”

Thank you to the 25 folks who participated in this year’s Institute and to our 12 facilitators. The 25 faculty will continue to reflect and implement strategies and learning as they participate in Faculty Learning Communities this fall.

Everyone keep an eye out for the application coming early 2024 for next year’s Summer Institute. We will focus on everyone’s favorite topic: DATA.
