Come to Dewey Hall this Saturday, November 26th, to see the remastered 1928 silent film "Steamboat Bill, Jr." starring Buster Keaton, with live, original music by Joanna Seaton, vocals & percussion, and the incomparable Donald Sosin on keyboards. Now recognized as one of his greatest films, "Steamboat Bill, Jr." is a coming-of-age story about the son of a riverboat captain, who has the unfortunate circumstance of being in love with the daughter of his father's rival. The film is known for what may be Keaton's most famous film stunt: During a storm, the façade of a house falls down around him while he stands in the precise location of an open window to avoid being flattened. Funds raised at this event will help support our ongoing outreach programs.

The next OWLES activity is set for Thursday evening, December 15 at 5:15 at the Mount. We will meet at Nancy King's house, to carpool to The Mount on December 15 at 4;30 PM for the 5:15 Nightwood tour. Liz Wells and Nancy will provide soup and bread, others may bring salads, drinks, or dessert to have at the meal afterwards.

The walk through the illuminated gardens and grounds of Edith Wharton's home in Lenox will take about 45 minutes, then we will return to the Wells' home for a pot luck supper. The price of admission for all adults is $22, and, if you plan to go, you must purchase your own ticket in advance from the website. Just google The Mount, Edith Wharton's Home, and the reservation application will appear. Let Liz or Nancy know you are coming, and they will contact you about the pot luck part.

Our reflection jumped off from the work of two nineteenth century philosophers.

Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel (1170-1831) said: "Without the world, God is not God." Later, Karl Barth (1886-1968) would respond, "God could be God without the world, but chooses not to be such a God."

After a robust discussion, we wrote the following collect:

God, you are our loving creator

We are poor wayfaring strangers

We come together in awe and wonder at your desire to be in relationship with us

We pray that we love ourselves as you love us.

AMEN
