PRESIDENT'S WELCOME

Welcome back everyone! I would also like to welcome all of our new directors and adult education staff to CAACE. Your CAACE Executive Board has been working hard all summer on professional development, conference planning, and advocacy efforts. The biggest update from CAACE is that we have hired our first ever full time executive director, Larry Covino! Most of you know Larry as the past president of CAACE and recently retired director of Bristol Adult Education. Larry will manage CAACE’s day to day operations while also chairing the annual CAACE Conference on March 7 and 8. He will also continue CAACE’s local, state, and national advocacy efforts. Also new this year is that all CAACE member programs are also members of ProLiteracy. CAACE is also working on a statewide license to LERN, which will help general interest programs, but will also help the mandated side of your programs with marketing, social medial, website design, and so much more. Also, a statewide digital marketing campaign kicked off on August 28, and we have already seen an uptick on our CAACE website. We are always looking for volunteers to serve on our CAACE Conference and Advocacy committees. If you are interested, please contact me at mangiaficoa@caace.org or Larry Covino at covinol@caace.org. I look forward to working with you all this year. Have a happy and safe start to the school year!

DUES REMINDER

Thank you to all the programs that have responded to our annual invoices for 2023-24 Association dues. We recognize that our dues have increased and several program leaders have reached out regarding this. Please note that dues are based on the number of employees working in your program. We based our 23-24 invoices off of the CSDE's FY22 Program Profiles. Also please note that CAACE has significantly increased the services provided to members. We hope you understand and support our efforts to increase our outreach and advocacy on behalf of all programs, big and small. If you have questions about an invoice, please contact Treasurer Lori Wyrebek at wyrebekl@caace.org.

Congratulations to our Connecticut GED Award Winners

CAACE is proud to announce that at this summer’s GED Conference in New York, two Connecticut Adult Learners were presented with the 2023 GED Graduate of the Year award. This award recognizes students who recently earned their GED credentials, displayed exceptional dedication during the preparation and testing process, and demonstrated outstanding stewardship in their community.

The graduates were nominated by adult educators, GED administrators and other stakeholders in the adult education community through an open call for nominations from GED Testing Service.

STAFF SPOTLIGHT

Larry

Special Thank You!

CAACE would also like to thank our former employees, David Downes and Sarah DeFeudis for their years of service helping CAACE grow and reach students and staff across the state. Their efforts were invaluable, especially during the COVID lock downs as we transitioned to a remote conference.

Welcome New Executive Director

On behalf of the CAACE Executive Board, we are excited to announce that Lawrence (Larry) Covino has been selected as our first CAACE Executive Director. After a comprehensive interview process the selection committee selected Larry for this new position.

Larry’s primary role will be to help our membership grow and prosper as well as to advocate on behalf of CAACE at the state and national level. Larry will also be the main point of contact for all CAACE business and for the CAACE Conference. Larry brings ten years of experience in adult education and as former President of CAACE, he has an in-depth understanding of the organization's strengths and weaknesses. Larry will be retiring as current Director of Bristol Adult Education effective August 31, 2023, and officially begins his new position September 1, 2023.

“I am really excited to have this opportunity to pursue my passion for adult education and for being able to bring all of the great things happening in Connecticut to the national stage.” Covino said. “I look forward to working with all of our programs and collaborating with our CSDE partners.”
