“Cultivating Kindness, Relationships, and Growth for all.”
News You Can Use: April 15, 2022

Dear CCGS Families,
We had a great week at school and it was wonderful to see so many of you brave the rainy weather on Wednesday night to attend our Art Exhibit. It was such a wonderfdul feeling having everyone back in the building for a school event. The students' art was so colorful and imaginative. My favorite part was hearing a kindergarten student explain to me how he used the pieces of paper to create a water park. He explained all of the ways the waterpark worked too. I see an engineer in his future! As a reminder there is no school for students tomorrow, April 15th or Monday April 18th. Next week is also Earth Week and Volunteer Appreciation Week!

Please see the message below from the Record Newspaper:
On Thursday, May 5th all four of our Record Newspapers will be dedicated to celebrating teachers as a way to thank them. We'll have stories and photos throughout the entire newspaper, which will be mailed to all subscribers, available for purchase on area newsstands, and will be on our website as our newspapers are every week (within the "Online Newspaper" drop down tab on our home page).

Our "Thank You, Teachers" contest is under way on our website, KendallCountyNow.com. We are asking students (present and past) to submit a short comment about their favorite teacher. The last day to nominate a teacher is this Sunday, April 17th. We are trying to get as much engagement as possible, so we're hoping you would invite your students to participate by providing this link to them: https://kendallcountynow.secondstreetapp.com/Kendall-County-Thank-You-Teachers-Contest/

Each week I offer a way for you to share a celebration or ask questions on this survey. If you would like a specific reply, please add your name so I can get back to you. If you comment about a specific teacher- I send this directly to them and I know it really brightens their day!

Here is a question someone asked: Does the Kdg snack need to be “healthy” options only? (Vegetable or fruit options only)? Or are crackers and chips okay? Families are asked to send a healthy snack for all grade levels. We ask that you send a snack that you view as healthy for your child as not everyone has the same access to the same foods.

  • Summer Camps: Please check out the summer camps available to students. The flyer is below!
  • Save the Date: The YGS Daddy Daughter Dance date is June 4th! More information to come soon.
  • YHS Musical: This week our third grade students will get a short performance of the musical.
  • Students should bring a snack each day to school. It is ok to bring more than one snack each day, but please don't send in a whole meal. Please send a water bottle each day also.
  • Please send an extra outfit for your child: Having an extra outfit for your student's locker will be very helpful!
  • Car Rider and Walker Reminders: The gate does not open until 2:50 p.m. please do not arrive prior to that to free up traffic on Mill Street. If parking in the lot, please park on the far side of the lot so you don't have to wait for buses. Please have your red or green name showing for pick up time whether a walker or a car rider. K-3 parents, please make a right turn only into the rear lot at the end of the day.
  • Lunch: Students have 3 lunch choices every day. The menu is on the Y115 app. You can also click here to find it!
  • Devices: Please ensire your child's chromebook and/or tablet are charged each day. Please also send the charger to school each day. We have several students coming without charged devices and we only have a limited number of back up devices.

Have a great Easter weekend with your families!

Mrs. Hamm

We invite you to join us for our 4th quarter Read Aloud Pajama Party on April 19th at 6:45pm! For the first half of our event we are thrilled to be hosting Caron Levis, author of 2022 Monarch nominee This Way, Charlie! This year our elementary students have celebrated this story of friendship & patience between a grumpy goat and blind horse, which is inspired by a true story from the Open Bud Ranch animal sanctuary. So as a special bonus, after Caron finishes her read aloud we will be taking a virtual tour of the Naperville Area Humane Society!
Please see the Zoom information below and the attached flyer for more information. Hope to see you on April 19th! =)

Teacher and Staff Appreciation week is the first week of May and we have had some parents ask what they can do to show appreciation. Here are some themed ideas for each day! Here are some of the teacher and staff favorites.
This student has been following the four CCGS Cornerstones this week! She will be leading the school in the pledge the week after break.
Mrs. Prentice's class has been working as a team and showing kindness to others. They were our golden platter winners this week and will get a recess with Mrs. Hamm or Mrs. Anderson!
News From Miss Karina's Classroom
Ms. Karina’s EC Classes

In our EC class, we couldn’t be happier with the growth we see with our little friends each day! A big part of our day revolves around play. The power of play is important in our early childhood classrooms because during play, our children are exploring language, literacy, math concepts, and essential social skills. It’s so great to see our friend’s smiling faces as they walk into the building and greet their teachers and friends!

For the month of April, our study is Gardening! We brought in some flowers and plants for our science area. Once everyone stepped into the classroom, the children were so excited to look at them! We also did an interactive read aloud with action cards for the story, Plants Can’t Sit Still. The children were excited to reach for the sunlight just like a flower. The children also enjoyed planting grass seeds in their own individual cup. They can’t wait to give their grass a “haircut”! We are so thankful for the YEF as they gave us the story, How to Grow a Friend. Each child had their own book as we read the story together! It was so much fun!

We are very proud of the progress our little friends have accomplished thus far this year!

Boredom Busters: Sixty-Second Word Family Naming
By:Familyeducation.com
“Play this rhyming game to help your child learn phonemic awareness and rhyme recognition. Play this car game for kids to help relieve boredom while in the car.”

Skills Being Practiced
-Phonemic awareness
-Rhyme recognition
-Sound manipulation
What You Need
-Timer or a watch with a second hand
How to Play
1. Explain to your child that you're going to play a game in which both of you will try to think of as many rhyming words you can in one minute. The catch is they all have to rhyme with the first word somebody says.
2. One of the things kids like best about this game is that there's no turn taking and anybody can keep track of the time. Once the beginning word has been said, then anybody can jump in with a rhyming word. Designate your timekeeper, shout out a word, and begin!
Game Variation
Once your child has gotten really good at coming up with rhyming words, you can make the game a little more complicated. It's time to introduce sentences into the game. Tell your child you're going to start a sentence and he needs to complete it with a word that rhymes with one of the words in that sentence. Once you start, you take turns changing one of the rhyming words in the sentence until you run out of rhymes or sixty seconds is up. Here's what that might look like:
You: "Have you ever seen a mop that can..."
Child: "Shop!"
You: "Have you ever seen a mop that can shop?"
Child: "No, I've never seen a mop that can shop, but have you ever seen a mop that can hop?"
You: "No, I've never seen a mop that can hop, but I have seen a top that can hop. What about you?"
Child: "I've never seen a top that can hop, but have you ever seen a top that goes plop?"
Since the object of the game is to see how well your child manipulates the beginning sounds of a word family to make rhyming words, it is okay to allow him to use nonsense words.
Extend the Learning
Take the timer out of the game and see how long you can keep a single rhyme going. With nonsense words allowed, it could go on a long time!
