Attacks Targeting FAFSA Recipients

While researching colleges and universities, most students have considered applying for Federal assistance or have already received Federal assistance. An essential part of this process is creating an account through studentaid.gov.

In recent years, threat actors have been researching institutions across the United States, crafting malicious, look-a-like emails, known as Phishing emails in an attempt to get users to provide their credentials. Emails like this may seem legitimate to the untrained eye, but do not be fooled. These are essentially fake emails containing fake links to sites that may seem legitimate, but only serve the primary purpose of stealing your login.

Here are a few tips to help you identify a phishing email.

  • Check the sender’s email address, attackers mimic legitimate sources.
  • Beware if the nature of the email requests urgent or immediate action.
  • If you suspect an email to be a phishing attempt, report and block it.

Have you considered the National Student Exchange

program for a semester or year?

National Student Exchange offers study away at colleges and universities throughout the United States, Canada, Guam, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Undergraduates can spend a semester or the academic year at another university. If you are interested in new challenges or just need a change of pace, NSE may be for you. NSE has 170+ campuses available for Fall 2025 and Spring 2025. Applications are due by Friday, February 28, 2025. https://nse.org/exchange/apply/

NSE is affordable. Students continue to pay tuition to their home campus while on exchange. Best of all, most financial aid applies.

NSE is accessible. Beyond being affordable, NSE is also accessible. No passport is required (other than Canada-U.S. exchange) and our eligibility requirements are modest.

NSE enhances your academics. NSE students take classes that apply to degree requirements and/or take classes not available at your home campus. Find campuses with your major.

NSE offers adventure. Exchange to a campus different than your own! Experience a large research university or perhaps a small private college. Exchange to a big city campus, a campus near the beach or in the mountains, or a campus in a college town. Exchange to a Multicultural Serving Institution (MSI) including HBCUs, HSIs, and AANAPISIs. Or perhaps check out Puerto Rico or Canada.

Scholarships in the amount of $6000 for exchange to Canada are available for US citizens through the Fulbright Killam Fellowship Program. Killam applications are due January 31, 2025. https://www.fulbright.ca/programs/killam-fellowships/americans

Explore your options using NSE's searchable map! https://nse.org/exchange/find-campus/

SUBMIT AN INQUIRY https://nse.org/exchange/contact/

Schedule an Appointment: through Starfish (service: CISP Education Away)

Attend an NSE INFO SESSION to learn the basics of NSE (tuition, financial aid, course options, housing, and research tips). https://nse.org/exchange/info/
