Join us for the 7th Annual Earth Day Fair on Saturday, April 19!

I cannot wait to see you all at the Earth Day Fair this weekend from 10:00a.m.- noon! Over the last few weeks, we've put together some amazing recycling opportunities, beautiful door prizes, and coordinated with 15 community partners to highlight ways we can enjoy the Northwoods and live sustainably. Keep reading below for more details on what's going on in just a few days.

Over the last 10-ish days, we've been lucky to welcome muralist Natalie Watland to complete a custom mural showcasing the amazing plants and animals that call the Northwoods home. The mural changes with the seasons and includes small tributes to what you see out of your windows. The mural is complete and ready for everyone to stop by and enjoy. Take some time and search for all the little hidden gems in our beautiful new piece.

I'm also incredibly excited to welcome our first Artist-in-Residence of 2025, Terry Hudson, to the Mercer Library! Terry will be hosting a 6-part class on sculpture building and her work will be on display until June of this year. Her artwork has been on display at many art shows in the area include the Emberlight Festival's Art in the Park. Her work has been inspired by the hunt for the elusive Lake Superior agate and demonstrates the joy she finds in creativity.

I hope you're all doing well and keeping your sanity through the fourth (and hopefully last) false-winter. We have seen a nesting robin at the library so I'm optimistic we'll start to truly warm up and can begin to enjoy springtime soon.

Construction and Renovation Update (4/17/2025)

In our last update, I let you know about the start of the bid process. We've accepted bid offers and are actively reviewing these proposals and hope to make a decision before the end of the month. We're still anticipating that the bulk of the work will occur later this year, but we will keep everyone updated as timetables are set and work is scheduled.

I want to thank everyone for your patience as we've worked through these renovations. We were hopeful that this project would have been finished by now, but it didn't end up working out that way. We are continuing to chip away at projects as we can in ways that won't affect library use. With the completion of the mural, one part of the project that has been funded by the Friends of the Library has been checked off the list.

Just today, I installed the new equipment for video conferencing in our meeting room. This equipment was purchased with funding provided by the Flexible Facilities program grant. With this, we're hoping to provide a better place for anyone who needs to offer remote meeting attendance.

There is still more work to do, but we're celebrating every success and completion in this project. Thank you all for your support and excitement through every phase we've moved through.

Stay tuned for additional updates coming through press releases, on social media, and on our dedicated page for the renovation.
