The Three Great and Holy Hierarchs

Basil the Great, Gregory the Theologian, and John Chrysostom

This common feast of these three teachers was instituted a little before the year 1100, during the reign of the Emperor Alexis I Comnenus, because of a dispute and strife that arose among the notable and virtuous men of that time. Some of them preferred Basil, while others preferred Gregory, and yet others preferred John Chrysostom, quarreling among themselves over which of the three was the greatest. Furthermore, each party, in order to distinguish itself from the others, assumed the name of its preferred Saint; hence, they called themselves Basilians, Gregorians, or Johannites. Desiring to bring an end to the contention, the three Saints appeared together to the saintly John Mavropous, a monk who had been ordained Bishop of Euchaita, a city of Asia Minor, they revealed to him that the glory they have at the throne of God is equal, and told him to compose a common service for the three of them, which he did with great skill and beauty. Saint John of Euchaita (celebrated Oct. 5) is also the composer of the Canon to the Guardian Angel, the Protector of a Man's Life. In his old age, he retired from his episcopal see and again took up the monastic life in a monastery in Constantinople. He reposed during the reign of the aforementioned Emperor Alexis Comnenus (1081-1118).

2024 Stewardship

Our Final 2024 stewardship numbers are in. Our stewardship committee is excited to announce, that we fell short of our 2024 stewardship goal. In total, $213,538 was donated in 2024 for stewardship, which is 99.8% of our goal of $214,000!

Even though we technically missed our goal, we knew that this was an ambitious goal to begin with, and we know how blessed we are to be able to count on our dedicated community to meet the needs of the church.

167 Stewards filled out pledge cards

an additional 57 made stewardship contributions without filling out a pledge card for a total of 224 Stewards.

For those who are curious, in 2023 we had 222 total stewards who contributed $202,006

Thank you to all those who make offerings for the benefit of this church and community, and to our dedicated stewardship team: Nick Andretitch Patty Roumeliotis

On the Sabbath we went outside the city gate to the river, where we expected to find a place of prayer. We sat down and began to speak to the women who had gathered there. One of those listening was a woman from the city of Thyatira named Lydia, a dealer in purple cloth. She was a worshiper of God. The Lord opened her heart to respond to Paul’s message. When she and the members of her household were baptized, she invited us to her home. “If you consider me a believer in the Lord,” she said, “come and stay at my house.” And she persuaded us (Acts - 16:13-15)
