From The Director
From the Director
As I write this, snow is falling outside the windows. You would think that after being back in the area for 8 years, it wouldn’t be a novelty anymore, but the first coating of white still brings a smile to my face. Is there anything more magical than watching snow fall quietly, blanketing the world in stillness? I’ve also grown to appreciate the quiet snow brings - things slow down and noises are muffled. The sense of peace that it brings is something I’m working on expanding in my life.
That sense is something that was on my mind when I read an essay not terribly long ago about making new year resolutions. It’s not something I’ve ever done; generally I assess goals and opportunities throughout the year, so it seemed superfluous to do so arbitrarily at the turn of the calendar. The essay proposed something interesting: to choose a word for your year and try to incorporate it into your year. This interests me and I am going to try to do so. The idea is to choose something, like perseverance, joy, calm, fascination, etc. and be mindful to bring it to what you do. I know it sounds like a copout, but I’m not going to share my word, but I encourage you to think about the concept and maybe incorporate it into whatever you do in this new year.
Speaking of the new year, so many things are happening at IVPL this year. February 1 is the Wine Tasting (get tickets on the website), February 8 is Mini-Golf at the Library, no registration required for this family-friendly event. We’re looking to do a lot of behind the scenes things to improve our services, some of which you will be able to notice, some not. So stay tuned.
Also, I want to say Thank You to all of you. I had some very difficult times in 2024, and knowing that the IVPL community was here made it easier to get through. The support that all y’all have for the Library continues to warm my heart and make me proud to be a part of it.
Join us at the Indian Valley Public Library for "Intimate Gardens: A Flower's-Eye View," a solo exhibition by Dr. Page Morahan featuring close-up photography of flowers from gardens worldwide, running February 2-28, 2025.
