Laudato Si' Project

Pope Francis, in 2015, promulgated the encyclical, Laudato Si', or Care for Our Common Home. He states: "I urgently appeal, then, for a new dialogue about how we are shaping the future of our planet. We need a conversation that includes everyone since the environmental challenge and its human roots concern and affect us all."

Learn more about the Laudato Si' Action Platform.

The Meadow Restoration part of our Laudato Si project has begun here at Fatima Shrine. What are the benefits of returning the land to meadows?

The meadow triples biodiversity, hosting over 84 plant species and numerous bug and spider species.

It is more climate-resilient than traditional lawns, with wildflowers surviving prolonged dry spells thanks to their deeper roots.

Reduced mowing and fertilization cut carbon emissions by 1.36 tonnes per hectare per year.

The meadow reflected 25% more sunlight, helping cool the urban environment.

Survey responses highlighted the meadow's benefits to mental well-being, environment, and educational value.

One-third of our lawn will be converted back to meadows in the next 5 years

Progress at the construction site of the first of hopefully five community garden plots that will produce food for local food pantries. Laudato Si! Praise God!

World Youth Day

For World Youth Day – The Pope Video 8 – August 2023

Pope Francis, quoting Saint John Paul II, tells us, “If you live with young people, you become young yourself, and the Church needs young people.” Thus begins the video with the prayer intention for August, produced by the Pope’s Worldwide Prayer Network, in which Pope Francis responds directly to questions posed by a few young people.

In his responses, he also reminds them to follow Mary’s example, who, “as soon as she knew she was going to be the mother of God, didn’t stay there taking a selfie or showing off. The first thing she did was to set out on a journey, in haste, to serve.”

And he concludes the video with the desire that this WYD be “a seed for the world’s future. A world where love is at the center, where we can sense that we are sisters and brothers.”
