"I'm extremely excited and honored to be the new Executive Director for 1000 Friends of Wisconsin. I have hit the ground running (or most likely, biking), learning and connecting in order to lead this critical organization into its next phase of growing collaborations, expanding coalitions, and building community resilience. Deb is leaving some big shoes to fill, but I do love a good challenge!"

Earth Fest at the University of Wisconsin–Madison will bring together all things environment and sustainability and unite our campus over the one resource and interest we all share: our world. Dive into groundbreaking research or dig in the dirt at community gardens. Sift and winnow the latest research or sort and filter recyclables. Make career connections for your future or master sustainable techniques for your home.

Earth Fest is for all members of the Badger community: from students to alumni, faculty to friends, and seasoned experts to future Badgers. Check out the amazing schedule here.

In The Trials, a jury of young people determines the fate of adults accused of contributing to the climate emergency – the younger generation holding parents and others accountable for environmental destruction.

Tense, emotionally charged, and eerily prescient, the play explores themes of justice, responsibility, and intergenerational conflict in a world struggling to survive. Yet, it’s not without humor, used deftly to engage the audience in a very real and connective dialog.

The State of Housing

1000 Friends sponsored The State of Housing event with Montavious Jones and Urban Spaceship in Milwaukee last week. Montavius is working with Carl Glasemeyer, 1000 Friends Land Use & Transportation Policy Director, on the proposed GrowingMKE zoning plan. This event was part of our ongoing efforts to provide information and resources to community members and encourage them to speak out and provide feedback to their alders, the mayor, and city planners.

We had quite a crowd on Tuesday at Wheel and Sprocket in Milwaukee.

Watch for more Urban Spaceship events in the future!

Montavius Jones, Founder of Narvarte Development, who organized the event, was a fantastic emcee!

Narvarte Development

John Johnson, a 1000 Friends board member and Research Fellow in the Lubar Center for Public Policy Research and Civic Education, presented some fascinating research he’s done about the Milwaukee housing market to a rapt audience of local urbanists, city employees, and advocates for affordable housing and safe streets.

SSTI: Innovative Framework

for State DOTs

State Smart Transportation Initiative (SSTI) has released a new innovative framework for state DOTs. States have a unique opportunity to lead in today’s evolving transportation landscape. By learning from peers and building on proven strategies, agencies can make necessary progress without reinventing the wheel. According to SSTI's framework, innovation requires agencies to have visionary leadership, put people first, make the most of the current system, and fuel innovation in their agency’s culture.
