Dear Families:

I can't believe that this weekend marks the end of October.

Just a reminder that the end of 1st quarter is on Thursday, November 4th and there will be NO school on November 5 for a grading day.

As you will see below our student led conferences will be on November 17 and November 18. Our conferences will be held during the day on November 17 and students will have an asynchronous day of virtual learning. More details will be available next week. Families will the option of an in person or virtual conference. SignUp Genius links will be listed in this newsletter as well as our website on November 11.

As I shared with you last week, our School Wide Rules and Beliefs were finalized by two of our student leadership teams after reviewing what all our students and Advisory classes said were important to their/our community. To share these with the greater student and school community, one of these teams created a video presentation of the School Wide Rules and Beliefs that were shown in Advisory class on Tuesday. It will be posted soon to our website ms.slpschools.org and I invite you to view this well done video that highlights student voice.

Continue to let us know if we can do anything further to assist your student in reaching their full potential and brilliance.

Sincerely,

Jason Boll
Interim Principal

8th Grade REM5 Learning Experience
Mrs. Wyffel's, Mr. Breitenbucher's, and Sr. Reyes Garcia's 8th grade I&S classes will be going to REM5 virtual reality laboratory in November for a learning experience for their Africa interdisciplinary unit. The students will have the opportunity to "explore" Africa and the refugee camp that they will be learning about in I&S and science class. This learning experience has been made possible through a grant from the St. Louis Park Public Schools Foundation.

The dates of the field trip are November 1-4, and the time is 9:15am-3:45pm. Each of the twelve classes will go to REM5 for their own two hour and 20 minute-ish time slot.

Students were given a permission form to be signed and returned to their I&S teacher by Tuesday, October 26th.  Parents are also required to "sign" an electronic REM5 waiver that can be found on the I&S Schoology course or here REM5 VR Laboratory Waiver. (The waiver only needs to be signed once.) All students need a permission form and waiver to attend the field trip.

Please contact your student's I&S teacher with any questions you may have..

Getting to Know....... Estefanny Chate

We would like to formally introduce you to Estefanny Chate, the Global Intern for St. Louis Park Middle School. Estefanny comes from Colombia, and she is very excited to work with all of our middle school students and to learn about American culture!

Every year the Global Intern program brings a unique and special experience to our school, and this year the students will have the opportunity to practice first-hand what they are learning about culture and conversation in their ESP and Spanish classes.  Estefanny will also be helping in a 6th grade math class and a 7th grade Advisory class, among other activities. Feel free to speak English and Spanish with her and join with us in welcoming Estefanny to SLPMS!
Tardiness and Food Reminders
We have recently observed an increased amount of tardiness on behalf of students. Students are expected to be in class on time, every period, every day in order to maximize instructional time.

As a reminder there is no food allowed to be brought out of the cafeteria and we discourage the dropping off of restaurant food for student lunch.
America Recycles Day Competition
The Environmental Student Leadership team has entered SLP Middle School into the America Recycles Day competition and could win up to $2,000 for St. Louis Park Middle School – but we need your help!

The America Recycles Day competition is a national contest between schools to collect the most used clothing to be given back to the community. Five winners will receive cash prizes for collecting the most clothes – measured in pounds – between Nov. 1 and Nov. 30.

If St. Louis Park wins, the Environmental Student Leadership team has decided to put the cash prize towards starting a school garden!

The Environmental Student Leadership team is asking students and families to chip in. Anyone with gently used clothes to donate can bring them to the clothing recycling bins located in the back parking lot of St. Louis Park Middle School, next to the soccer fields.
