THIS SUNDAY'S
WORSHIP SERVICE
"Changing My Mind"

Rev. Greg Chute, Guest Speaker

Annie Lavin, Service Leader

Michael Casey & Fredy Granillo, Musicians

In Person and Zoom

Sunday, November 13, 2022

Change is a constant in life. It can bring learning and growth but challenges as well. How do we respond to the ongoing changes we face globally, personally, politically? This Sunday we continue the theme of Change with guest minister, Rev. Greg Chute. “We all experience change, sometimes good, sometimes not so good, and everywhere in between. Hence lots of books, seminars, and other assorted advice on how to navigate change. The two most helpful sources for me have been the Buddha and Archbishop Tutu.” Join us for new perspectives and lend your voice to the discussion.

So we can begin the service promptly at 10 am, please sign into Zoom (click here) by no later than 9:50 am.

"Everyone at the Table - Our Annual Bread Communion Service"

We invite all in the community - especially children and families - to be a part of our annual intergenerational Bread Communion service. Through this service of fun songs, stories, and the ritual of setting a shared table, we'll remind one another of the many ways we experience gratitude in our lives. The service will be led by Rev. Sue Browning and Nancy Holland.

This year we're inviting contributions of bread (or muffins, or rolls), apples and other fruit that we can use in our ritual of setting a table big enough for all! (And we'll each get to take home some bread and fruit!)

We welcome all to this special service! If you have questions, please be in touch with Rev. Sue, Nancy Holland, or email the office at uuofchesterriver@gmail.com.

"The Person Before You: Reflections on Worth"

These are days of uncertainty when behaviors, perhaps even our own, bring into question our First Principle. Unitarian Universalist congregations affirm and promote, as their First Principle, "the inherent worth and dignity of every person." This implies that we must treat everyone as a person of worth and dignity, and that can be really hard to do. Let's be honest, some individuals don't exhibit much worth and dignity. And sometimes our first impression of a person is not as an individual but as a group member. We see race, gender expression, or social status — all of which affect the life of the person before us but are not the totality of the person. If we really believe in worth and dignity, how do we live our lives?

Veterans Day, originally known as Armistice Day, occurs on November 11 every year in the United States in honor of the “eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month" of 1918 that signaled the end of World War I, which was supposed to be “the war to end all wars."

In 1954, former five-star general President Dwight D. Eisenhower officially changed the name of the holiday from Armistice Day to Veterans Day.

In 1968, the Uniform Holidays Bill was passed by Congress, which moved the celebration of Veterans Day to the fourth Monday in October. The law went into effect in 1971, but in 1975, President Gerald Ford, a former lieutenant commander, returned Veterans Day to November 11, due to the important historical significance of the date.

Today, Veterans Day commemorates veterans of all wars and is often extended to all veterans regardless of where they have served.

  • A: We will figure out a way to get them to you.

Q: What can I do to help with this fun fundraiser?
  • A: Lots of things! You can volunteer to make bread (we need two more bakers) or to help with setting up, serving, and cleaning up after our meal! Email Jane Hardy, janewhardy@gmail.com. Most importantly, buy a ticket and enjoy bread, soup, and socializing on Dec 9.

Proposed Pathway to the Memorial Garden Display
If you haven't already seen it, the proposed Pathway to the Memorial Garden has been marked out with both painted lines and flag markers. The design, developed by Penny McCrea and Terry Goldzier, is also shown on the large display in the church's hallway. Along with this display are the options being considered for its construction.

Please take time to review the foregoing in preparation for an upcoming congregational meeting where we will decide on a direction for this project.

Thank you,

For the Committee,

Jim Lavin
