We are posting a brief day by day meditation from Forward Movement. It's a great way to start your morning! Just click on the website icon above.
This weekend, we walk through the most powerful stages of Jesus’ life. We remember his death on the cross on Good Friday, which devastated all those who hailed him as he rode into the city of Jerusalem. Jesus would not be an earthly king as they wished. As Christians, we are invited into the depths of their sorrow: fear, deep disappointment, and death.
We know the rest of this story, as well, though. On Easter, Jesus’ tomb is empty. Jesus had risen from the dead. As he often taught his disciples, the suffering and death in this world are never the end. Rather, there is a deeper and more universal life that awaits us, whenever we open ourselves to it. Jesus conquered not an earthly king, but death, itself. In doing so, he showed us the way to a new and infinitely richer life.
Our church invites us to join this story this week, noticing where it touches us deeply. Any place where fear and violence threaten may occur to us; for me, this year, Ukraine comes to my heart and mind. Just as in Jesus’ time, where violence threatens, earthly kings of various sorts offer fear and death as if they were the only reality. Christians, though, know otherwise. We need only remember Jesus’ resurrection to find our true selves and souls in an entirely different place, where no harm can come to us, now or ever.
.
The pisanka, pictured above, is a symbol of new life. Christians in Ukraine and in many other places in the world decorate such eggs this week to symbolize the resurrection–and their knowledge of God’s greater life, beyond the one that we inhabit now.
During this Holy Week, let us walk with Jesus to the cross–and then, with others who loved him so deeply, to the empty tomb. And may we rest with them in that Great Mystery of the resurrection, which offers new life, now and always. –Rev. Libby+
