Report on Excellence in Physical Therapy Education
Soon to be Released

A report outlining a shared vision for excellence in physical therapy education has been approved by the boards of APTA, the American Council of Academic Physical Therapy, and the APTA Academy of Education. The report will be available in an Open Access supplement of the Journal of Physical Therapy Education in mid-December.

Recognizing a need to continue physical therapy education’s evolution, a team of education stakeholders formed the Education Leadership Partnership in 2016 and over the past several years committed to developing a comprehensive strategy. The result is a report, “A Vision for Excellence in Physical Therapy Education,” that represents a shared vision of multiple stakeholder groups and individuals, including APTA, ACAPT, and APTA Education.

“Our expectation,” the report states, “is that education stakeholders will now move from envisioning the future to effecting meaningful change in physical therapy education in the coming decades that advances the profession and societal health outcomes.”

Education Leadership Partnership to End

On the joint recommendation of the presidents of the Academy of Education, APTA and ACAPT, the boards of the three partner organizations each formally agreed not to renew the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that formed the Education Leadership Partnership (ELP) in February 2016. As stated by APTA President Sharon Dunn in a letter to ELP members on 10/21/21, and as supported by the partner boards, the ELP’s “stated purpose [per the MOU] has been fulfilled…. We see this as an opportunity to be more inclusive and intentional in the work ahead.” Per the MOU, notification of withdrawal of one [or more] of the partners voids the MOU. The ELP will officially end in February 2022.

Sunsetting of the ELP should not affect implementation of the ELP’s culminating report, “The Vision for Excellence in Physical Therapy Education” (“Vision”). There has been a working assumption that each group in the ELP (whether represented by voting or non-voting ELP members) will determine how the recommendations of the “Vision” fits within the group’s mission, vision, and strategic plan. That is, implementation of the “Vision” was not intended to be dependent upon the ELP. Rather, as noted by President Sharon Dunn, “education stakeholders will now move from envisioning the future to effecting meaningful change in physical therapy education in the coming decades….”

The presidents of the Academy of Education, APTA and ACAPT will be meeting during CSM in San Antonio. They will initiate what are likely to be extensive discussions on how best to commit to a continuation of the collaboration and excellence in communication that characterized the ELP, as well as how to include other physical therapy education stakeholders. It is expected that the proposed strategy(ies) for collaboration and communication that emerge will be endorsed by the partner boards as a mechanism to ensure continuity over time.

PTA Education Summit -- Engage, Envision, Evolve

The APTA Academy of Education is conducting a three-phase summit on the future of PTA education. The PTA Education Summit is designed to address current challenges in PTA education, with the goal of formulating prioritized recommendations for future work that will prepare PTAs to better meet the demands of contemporary physical therapy, thus strengthening the PT/PTA team.

Let YOUR voice be heard! Everyone with an interest in the role and education of physical therapist assistants is invited to participate in Phase 2 from November 1, 2021 to January 7, 2022. This phase of the summit is a virtual asynchronous format that allows participants to engage from any location with internet access during the times that fit with personal schedules. It is important to have broad stakeholder engagement of clinicians, educators, administrators, patients and students, so please share this invitation with others.

The modules in Phase 2 are interactive lessons that promote a shared understanding of PTA history, education, role & scope of work, from which to engage with key questions designed to identify the priorities and future work needed in PTA education. The qualitative and quantitative data generated from Phase 2 will inform the recommendations and priorities generated in Phase 3, which is scheduled as a virtual meeting of approximately 35 stakeholder representatives on February 25 & 26, 2021. Volunteers interested in Phase 3 are required to participate and complete the Phase 2 modules.

Applications for Phase 3 are available through the Volunteer Portal by Monday, December 6, 2021.
