SPOTLIGHT ON PEGGY REILLY-O’BRIEN AND HER TEAM by Volunteer Contributer Jill Teitelman
If you shine a light on Peggy Reilly-O’Brien, she will pull 21 Cape Cod Regional Tech students into the spotlight with her. “These kids are hooked on giving back,” says their SkillsUSA Advisor proudly. “They understand we’re all connected.”
Originally a Dental and Health Educator at the high school, she got involved with the SkillsUSA organization in 2008 because it helps students in the trades become world-class technicians as well as community leaders.
|
|
After hearing about Habitat for Humanity four years ago, Reilly-O’Brien helped her SkillsUSA team host a school “Dream Builders” Breakfast to raise funds for the Habitat build in Dennis. The following year, the kids collected treasures to auction off at the Breakfast, raising even more funds for local Habitat homes.
Cape Cod Regional Tech's Vocational Director Annie Dolan-Niles came to the event and saw the collaboration as a natural partnership: These kids are in the construction trades, and Habitat builds houses.
Carpentry students visited the site, caught the enthusiasm, and volunteered to help. Currently Electric, Plumbing and HVAC shop students are working on Habitat Cape projects and Carpentry is building a shed for a Habitat home. continue

Sandwich. Cotuit Road and Nauset Street. We are waiting for approval of the project’s Regulatory Agreement from the Department of Housing & Community Development (DHCD). Following their approval, we will submit all required documents to the Town’s building inspector for issuance of building permits, hopefully right after the first of the new year. We plan to begin infrastructure work this winter. There will be a total of three homes built, two on Cotuit Road and one on Nauset Street. If all goes well, we will raise walls on these homes in late summer, August or September 2022.
Chatham. George Ryder Road South. Building permits for the two homes in this project were issued on December 3rd. We will begin infrastructure work soon after the first of the new year. We are planning on a wall raising in June 2022.
Brewster. 26 Red Top Road. Our 40B Comprehensive permit was approved by the Brewster ZBA on October 12th, and is now recorded with the Town Clerk. We look forward to a 2023 wall raising for two homes on this site.
Dennis. 401 Setucket Road. We have the property under agreement and continue planning for a four home project on the site. Stay tuned for more information.
We are assessing feasibility of a number of sites in towns across the Cape. We are always on the lookout for suitable sites for Habitat homes. If you would like to consider the donation of a parcel of property, or know of a town owned site that might be suitable, please contact Beth Wade, Director of Land Acquisition & Project Development, at land@habitatcapecod.org or 508-362-3559 x 24. Thank you!

We believe deeply in the mission of HHCC — and we have abiding confidence in the exceptional staff. We want to leave a bit of our heritage to several lasting causes, and it has simply made sense to include HHCC. This chapter does remarkable and lasting good here on the Cape, meeting a need which surely will continue long into the foreseeable future. Lives have been, and will continue to be, profoundly changed for the better and in a long-lasting way — simply by the provision of safe, affordable, stable, and eco-friendly housing. - Dr. Rob and Bev Park
