CELEBRATING THE PRESIDENT'S SHOWCASE OF UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH EXCELLENCE
One of our most prestigious events as an office was held on Thursday, September 22, 2022 in the Honors, Scholars, and Fellows House. The 2022 President's Showcase of Undergraduate Research Excellence returned as an in-person event this year! As a collaboration between the Office of the President and the Center for Undergraduate Research and Academic Engagement (CRE), the Showcase is the culmination of the IDEA Grant and Tech Fellows program, and at the President’s Showcase, students share their research and creative projects through poster and oral presentations.

The IDEA Grants are a reflection of the University's commitment to developing students as scholars and innovators and are a testament to the stimulating education undergraduates receive at Florida State. These students' projects share in the University's mission of nurturing independent thinkers, who are learning to create solutions that enrich both our campus and our larger communities. Their hard work does not end at this event, as many of the awardees will continue their intellectual pursuits through honors theses, independent study projects, graduate research, and entrepreneurial and creative work.

We also want to offer our sincerest gratitude to Robert and Mary Frappier, Nancy Casper Hillis and Mark Hillis, Steve Madden, Dr. Jim Lee, the family of Dr. Lisa Scott, Bill Tyler, the late David B. Ford, the Angela C. Richardson fund, and Phi Eta Sigma for their continued financial support of our summer research awards.

For our undergraduates, we hope you’ll be inspired to develop your own research or creative projects. To learn more about the IDEA Grant or other programs offered by the Center for Undergraduate Research and Academic Engagement (CRE), visit our website https://cre.fsu.edu/undergradresearch/ideagrants

The CRE also helps undergraduate students in any discipline get involved with research in their field and helps fund conference travel, find out more about research advising at cre.fsu.edu/students/getting-started.

We were so proud to see the amazing research projects our students presented. With over 700 attendees, we know that students had an engaging experience presenting their work to the wider community.

Check out the event writeup from FSU News and be sure to watch their video embedded in the article. We look forward to seeing you at the 2023 President's Showcase of Undergraduate Research Excellence.

GLOBAL SCHOLARS APPLICATION OPEN AND INFORMATION SESSIONS!
The Global Scholars application is now open! The FSU Global Scholars program offers a unique opportunity for undergraduate students to engage with critical questions about social impact, social justice, and social change through a combination of academic, classroom-based learning as well as independent research, internship, and/or service-learning experiences. This program will be recruiting for the 2023 cohort in Fall 2022! Please read the description of the program below for more information!

The Global Scholars program provides students with guidance and support as they pursue their own student-designed learning experiences. In the context of this program, ‘student-designed experiences’ might include:
  • An online internship with a social impact organization (in the US or abroad)
  • An in-person internship with a social impact organization (in the US or abroad)
  • A self-directed research project focused on a social issue of your choosing in your local context

While the program does support international travel, students can opt to alternatively complete an experience remotely or within the US. The program then retains its strong ‘global’ focus by helping students situate their internship and research experiences in relation to broader global issues, interconnections, and histories.

The Global Scholars program does not directly sanction these student-designed learning experiences. Rather, the Global Scholars Program provides peer community, mentorship, curriculum, and a structure for ongoing intellectual inquiry as students pursue experiences that align with their own interests, goals, budgets, and timelines. As such, the program provides a uniquely accessible and affordable pathway through which FSU students can engage with independent opportunities for learning and professional development.
