President's Message

Dear CSCS Members:

The world continues to battle the COVID-19 pandemic nearly 2 years after the first report of the virus emerged. In these extremely challenging times, we must as health care providers and leaders in cardiac surgery continue to define the “new normal” as we strive to continue to provide the best in cardiac surgical care for our patients. To meet this need, the CSCS Board of Directors (BOD) has sought to provide ongoing value to serve you in areas of clinical practice guidance and ongoing educational opportunities.

In conjunction with the CCS Rapid Response Team (RRT) and Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS), the CSCS has helped to lead the publication of key guidance documents in the areas of perioperative vaccination and provision of ECMO. In addition, in order to meet a number of challenges that we, in the cardiac surgery community, are being faced with, the CSCS Board of Directors has created a number of taskforces to target specific “button issues” facing our Society. Information regarding these and other exciting activities are being delivered to you now in our quarterly newsletter.

We have also launched our fully redesigned website (www.canadiansocietyofcardiacsurgeons.ca) and our very own CSCS YouTube Channel. Please peruse these sites for continuously updated content including our Virtual Trainee Lecture Series and CSCS Beats podcast. We have also initiated a Society LinkedIn site for free job postings and networking for our membership.

In 2022, we will have 3 CSCS events in addition to the Canadian Cardiovascular Congress (CCC). The first will be the national Bigelow Resident Research Day, to be held virtual on February 26th, 2022. Next will be our Spring Meeting, to be held in June with final details forthcoming in the very near future. Lastly is our Junior Resident Trainee Forum (Bootcamp) which will be held in Toronto this July.

In summary, I would like to thank you for your support over the years, but I am also encouraging you and your colleagues to renew your commitment to the CSCS. In 2022, the CCS will be continuing its relationship with its Affiliates under the "One Heart Team Model" which should promote inclusiveness within the CCS as a whole.

I am looking forward to continuing to work for you, our members, and YOUR CSCS. There is no other association in Canada that speaks on our behalf as cardiovascular surgeons. Please feel free to contact me directly with any comments/suggestions or to any of the following CSCS Regional Representatives on how we can improve our Society to better serve your needs.

Atlantic Representative, Edgar Chedrawy

Quebec Regional Representatives, Emmanuel Moss and Tarek Malas

Ontario Regional Representatives, Richard Whitlock and Jennifer Higgins

SK, MB, and AB Representative, Scott McCLure

BC Regional Representative, Lynn Fedoruk

Cardiac Surgery Resident Representative, Abigail White

I wish each one of you and your families a wonderful, prosperous, and successful 2022!
